Outstanding first episode. Excellently paced and edited and wonderful performances. I was surprised not see Sarah Polley in the credits but got confused, and she's working on Alias Grace instead.

I think I spotted Dame Margaret herself in one of the Auntie scenes.
 
watching this now. halfway through the second episode (fell asleep midway last night)... something about it bothers me, not sure what.

i like the way it's shot and the colours are beautiful but i find bits of it really hard to swallow and others rather grating. i shall persist though, cause i think the premise has a lot of potential.

4 episodes have aired now and I'm still loving this. Uncomfortable to watch at times but the balance between past and present is really well done.

Casting wise it's spot on as well. There are only a few bits I can remember from the film but having The Commander and Serena Joy as a woman closer to Offred's age rather than old enough to be her parents makes the dynamic more curious. Not sure I've seen Yvonne Strahovski in anything before but there's a lot going on under the surface.
 
I'm really loving this, such a perfect adaptation and it's not dull like some prestige tv show. The cast is amazing (poor Alexis Bledel). I wish they would give us more Serena, so far I see no reason why they de-aged her even if Yvonne is quite good.
 
Channel 4 will be showing this in the UK, with it due to air "soon".
 
I binged this at the weekend. It's so so so good. As it's one of the few books I have actually read it's quite hard to get past the discrepancies but I see a second season on route so fair enough.
 
A guy I dated last week (not calling him again), made us watch the first episode. I really liked it. On to episode 4 now.

Stupid question maybe but should I read the book before watching the series? I normally want to read before watching a movie.

It's available on our HBO Nordic streaming service but I need to watch the new season of The Leftovers first.
 
I read the book last week and then started watching the series.

I'd wholely recommend the book first, although the series has a few changes which - if the book is still fresh in your mind - may seem bizarre.

Episode 6 had a nice twist at the end and lovely to see a bit of Serena Joy's back story. She is giving me serious Betty Draper vibes at the moment.
 
So someone explain me this Hulu thing, is it not like Netflix where everything is available in one go? Coz I can't find anything after episode 6.
 
It's being "broadcast" in the traditional manner, with one episode each Wednesday.
 
A huge swerve in direction this week that looked like it was heading in The Last Of Us direction but this is still so bloody good.
 
If you like this then seriously add any Atwood book to your summer reading list - her writing is just out of this world, the way she describes subtle everyday behaviours just makes my brain dance. Alias Grace" is my favourite book of all time and so is my ultimate recommendation.
 
I see this launched on Channel 4 tonight. Twitter has gone into a frenzy. I've really enjoyed it, but the latest US time episode was a drag, he was never an episode worth of material.
 
After the discussion over whether Feud or Big Little Lies would take home the Best Actress prizes in awards season, Miss Moss is making a late surge for the podium. She was outstanding this week.

Handmaid adjacent, Alias Grace has a release date of 27th September and some stills on IMDB.

I never read Alias Grace because I didn't fancy the description of the story but I might give it a try on your recommendation. I love Oryx and Crake.

Elizabeth would be in drama series, Feud and BLL are mini series.

Alias Grace has a trailer as well but I'm not sure if the date is the Netflix date or the Canadian date.
 
god, i hated the finale.
i almost wish i hadn't bothered with this overlong melodrama at all.
 
Just watching the first one so not reading the thread but this is right up my street. I love a good dystopia.
 
Fiennes is the weakest link of the bunch

overall I thought it was a great run but I really struggled with the overly explanatory voice-over that the Americans love (why think an independent thought when you can be told how to analyze a facial expression or a scene, right? :DAF:)

The book has a lot of inner monologue. It couldn't be ignored entirely. Besides I felt the Offred actress gave so much facial expression in addition.
 
I was disappointed by the last episode but only because I was hoping for a resolution and the end of the story.

Is there going to be another series? I haven't read the book so I don't know whether it has an ending as such.

I don't mind narration as such when it complements and adds to the scenes (in books we need those details to paint inner images, on screen faces do half the conveying so let's hear something else). the 'she gave me a box with a lonely ballerina because I'm like the ballerina trapped in a cage' line felt particularly superfluous. I feel it's very condescending and filler when obvious things are explicitly stated
