I was thinking only yesterday on TOTP that I'd forgotten both of them really could sing...
 
Oh they can sing. I just don't like their voices - Shirlie's particularly. I find it hard and cold.
 
I don't mind When Smokey Sings, but fuck me, that went on for about 10 mins.
 
Pretty sure that's the first time I've heard Trek Trekkin' since 1987. It's the first #1 I remember.
 
Surely Setting Sun (Chemical Brothers) is partly based on this truly horrible Broken English track.
 
I'm back a bit...

The Smiths doing "Sheila Take A Bow" - I had to go to a church thing so I taped this episode. When I got home, the tape had oxidised and it was unwatchable fuzz. I was gutted. TOTP wasn't even repeated in those days.

Mozzer's "I;m a little teapot" dance is one thing but Marr looks as if he enjoyed a small libation in the subsidised BBC bar and the group are laughing their arses off at the end. They didn't look like a band on the edge of splitting.

Ah well.
 
...and yet I remember "Glenn and Chris" perfectly.

Felt sorry for them in a way. They so obviously didn't want to be "Hoddle and Waddle" but that's what everyone called them anyway.

Now I don't think I remember Star Trekkin being number one as such (I think the first was probably Rick Astley) but we did have it on seven inch, and I do remember dancing to it that summer, and there is delightful photographic evidence of my brother captured fingers to his head doing the dance.

In fact, you know that meme about what was #1 when you were 14? I;d always thought it was "It's A Sin" but actually I bought that on my 14th birthday, it hadn't got there yet.

It was "Star Trekkin'".

In 1987, The Jesus And Mary Chain were considered a good opening act for an episode of Top Of The Pops.

Great record.

Deliberately bad miming was sooooo rock 'n' roll in them days.

That Marillion record sounds oddly ageless...best thing tho' is the height differencial between Fish and bassist Peter Trewavas. Poor dinky Pete

I seem to recall he was with them for several years without ever being in the band.

I detest myself for saying it, but I'd hatefuck early era Marti Pellow. But the rest really are a random bunch.

Thankfully owing to the involvement of both DLT and JONATHAN KING I doubt it was recently RESHOWN

 
The Bruce Willis pop career really was a low.

Good to see that Terence retained the ridiculous backing singers.
 
I know this is 32 years ago, but I'm so pleased the Pet Shop Boys got to number one again!
