I assume it's a BIZARRE way of referring to close work colleagues :confused: but my first thought was when you get those blokes who secretly have two whole families with kids and everything and you wonder HOW ON EARTH they manage to carry on two lives at once
 
Yeah it's not really a term any British person would use to refer to the people at work, hence the absurdity of the ad.
 
I do miss the office at times, but then I remember that I had to get up at 5:50 to be in for 7:15 to avoid the worst traffic and suddenly working from home doesn't seem so bad after all...
 
I do 2 days in the office, which is good and I'm very productive when I'm in, and I'm glad to get out of the house, however I still feel like sacking it off by 3pm.

Then I went on Tuesday to collect all my shit from my locker. They're really fucking gone to town on one way systems. No lifts allowed, most of the toilets closed, even the bicycle racks are socially distanced. NO THANKS
 
I begrudge having to set my alarm for 6.30am now and get dressed and drive through the (admittedly very light at the moment) traffic. Whilst working from home the only time my alarm was used was on Mr F's operation day (22nd July) and that was 5am, even if I'd got up at 8.30am I'd still be in time to log on to the office.

I had to put petrol in the car this morning. Only the second time since mid-March so I've saved a fortune by working from home, I estimate around £480.
 
Ready to eat my words but I can’t see us tipping completely out of control again that suddenly.

Can you really compare numbers now to those pre-lockdown though? I know here they're testing anyone with a soar throat now as opposed to only actual sever cases pre-lockdown.

Oh absolutely so, I was just wondering. They will try to contain things in local lockdowns rather than another national one anyway...
 
The numbers are going up and they will continue to go up - it's to be expected. I'm a bit surprised at how much the BBC is getting paid by the government. "The numbers are STABLE." How does 'stable' = gradually creeping up when you look at the graphs? Doublethink frenzy.

Anyway there won't be another national lockdown. So we may as well just prepare ourselves for a challenging winter.
 
The most important thing remains how the healthcare system is coping. Even though current infection rates here are higher than they were pre-lockdown, hospitals are still no where near being overwhelmed. For now.
 
Aren't fewer people dying too? (as a proportion of cases). That must count for something.

What about care homes?

The biggest scandal in the UK was how appallingly patients in care homes were handled. And it continues to be the case because care homes are not a high priority for testing (honestly you couldn't make this up.)

And also, hospitals are not near being overwhelmed for now but let's wait and see what the numbers look like in the winter with added winter pressures and flu as well...

That's true. We know more about the virus than the early days and how to manage patients in critical care and there have been fast-tracked trials so that's good news...

Cases ARE stable according to the ONS survey though. Obviously I think it’s shocking in itself on a number of fronts that “managing” the cases at around 10k a week is being heralded as some kind of success but they are being managed as things stand.

Also as has been pointed out, confirmed cases have been creeping up for 6 weeks now and that hasn’t been reflected at all in hospital admissions and deaths, so it’s not cause for concern yet I don’t think.

Same here in Ireland. We’ve had 1800 deaths, 1100 of which were in care homes. It’s an utter scandal.

And yep, the hospitalisation and deaths figures are reasonably low now, but the big fear is the virus spreading again into the elderly population.

But that's my point. It's not a cause for concern yet but let's see where we are come winter.

Let's rewind back to Feb when it was kicking off in Europe and this government downplayed it, and then we went into lockdown too late and have ended up with the worst death rate in Europe.

We are not immune from the rest of the world or what's going on in Europe now either. We followed their trends in Feb/March and we may well follow their trends again..

So let's watch and wait. I'm not being all doom and gloom - I'm just being cautious particularly with the confusing all changing rules and this incompetent government.
 
Yeah think I was overreacting somewhat. Too much looking at the case numbers going up and up, and some Reddit rubbing off on me on a day that the doomers rather than the bloomers have gained traction for the upvotes.... still, it's a bit worrying that we had about 1000 cases this time last week and about 2000 cases now.

Dr Campbell is an absolute saint and has been a voice of reason both good and bad all the way through. Very neutral - when he figured that things were going to be shit (back in like January! and for a while after) he said so, and now there are reasons for optimism he's also saying so. I trust him much more than any other news source, as he actually does this ancient lost art called 'journalism' and provides sources. Knight him, seriously

The fact he's still optimistic, and is also saying that testing is way different to what it was at the start (and manages to put it in a more detailed way than the Trumpesque "it's just more testing guys!!11!") makes me inclined to believe what people are saying about it not actually being that bad despite the unsettling graphs. I should really just switch off Reddit, BBC, papers, etc, and just get 100% of Corona news from this chap.

I am a little sceptical of the ONS thing. I did one of those swab tests that people do for the ONS.... it was much harder than it looks, and I'd be astounded if detection was more than 50% at best due to how easy it'd be to cock it up (especially doing it to someone else like a kid, or an elderly person trying it). Doesn't mean the situation is bad, but I'd take their numbers with a pinch of salt personally.

Fingers crossed my unbridled optimism a few days ago that we get a vaccine this year comes true. US now looking to vaccinate in November. Then maybe we can avoid the worst of winter. Still, I remember at the start of all this when we were saying "thank goodness it's summer soon, it'll kill it off", everyone was very quick to point out that Australia was well infected and it was summer there at the time, therefore it's not seasonal. But now that it's getting towards winter, people are saying it's seasonal.

I think they made up 40% of the deaths? (Can't remember where I heard that, but it's believable). Releasing people back into homes without testing was absolutely CRIMINAL and there should be manslaughter charges involved IMO. (I'd go so far as to almost say murder, but that's me thinking it seemed a bit deliberate and generally being a Tory hater.)
 
An elderly lady in a care home in the town here died of covid so the care home has been closed to visitors. Three members of staff have also tested positive. The first death in Perthshire since June.
 
Although it was very scary before hand when everything kicked off I didn’t actually hear of any local cases of covid. So this has made me pretty apprehensive again.
 
Omg, Donald Trump is going to start rolling out a fake vaccine against coronavirus or one that has just been through very limited testing days before the election, isn’t he!?

There's been a small outbreak at the local barracks which is about 10 minutes walk from my house.

The FDA should stop him from doing anything like that. The FDA commissioner was appointed by Trump but has previously contradicted him on some of his Coronavirus related bollocks, so hopefully wouldn't stand for a fake or undertested vaccine.
 
There was a sizable anti-lockdown protest here in Edinburgh today. So many idiots and conspiracy theorists complaining about the thing their actions are likely to result in.

I swear if we have a rise in cases on the back of this and get put into a local lockdown... :argh:
 
Local (outdoor) chilli festival was on. Lots of stalls with super hot chilli sauces to try and such like. Had a look just to see if it was somehow made safe enough to have a go at (it's only 12 miles away) and came straight back. MASSIVE queue, they were letting 650 people in, 10 out 10 in. Would've been stood in the queue for hours! Plus the queue was all on top of each other, no distancing, no masks. Noped the hell out of there. Maybe next year...

Must admit I wondered how it could possibly be safe. Usually each stall has a huddle of people reaching over each other to try things. Limiting the numbers makes sense, it's just surprising how many people turned up - I guess with everything else in the country being cancelled, people flocked to the one thing still running. Which would've made it all the more risky, with the mixing of people from up and down the country.

Things are a little bit odd that way. We're in a 0-2 zone on the government map. A pub one town away shut after one of the punters was responsible enough to report a positive result. I've heard "1 case" and I've heard 14, all rumours. No stats in the paper, just one story about the pub being responsible and closing.

Bolton seems to be back in total lockdown? Are shops and hospitality closed there again?
