Traditions or just general nostalgic hankerings.

I feel like childhood Christmas ended for me the year I stopped getting Beano annuals. Browsing through the annual could keep me busy right up until New Year at best.

I complained to my mum about not getting Beano annuals any more and so she started buying me them again. I think I used the last one as a surface for racking up ket. (soz mum)

As a little kid we spent Christmas at my grandparents, there was cousins and lots of family merriment. It was a wholesome time, I don't miss it persay, but now Christmas is just parents and us and Ron Jr. which is nice, but its basically just a fancy roast rather than a party.

I also think, from a parent perspective, that the whole Santa thing isn't what it used to be where we were kids. I think they know pretty early on its all a myth, where as I spent quite a few years uncertain, setting traps and trying to catch 'santa' out - and they did loads of stuff to try and trick me into believing. Where as Ron Jr pretty much knew a few years ago thanks to the internet.

I miss the shit my grandad used to buy for me from Lewisham market every Christmas WITHOUT FAIL. Normally a few bars of chocolate covered in Arabic text and four cans of Lilt. I mean I WASN'T COMPLAINING and when I think back he was probably all I LIVED THROUGH THE GERMAN OCCUPATION OF POLAND, LILT IS BASICALLY CAVIAR.

I think my god sons have clung for as long as possible. I'd be AMAZED if the 10 year doesn't know, but the 8 year old who still believes in dragons may still have another year.

I think I was 6 when I figured it out.

I think in general the childs relationship with 'stuff' has changed anyway. When you can buy console games online and be playing them 2 minutes later the magic of waiting until Christmas day for the latest title just ebbs away. Or maybe I'm just hungover on Christmas morning and thats ruining it.

I miss Christmas morning being FUCKING AMAZING.

These days I'm normally hungover, facing an hour at Church and then off to my folks.

Having been drunk the night before it's likely I've already opened EVERYTHING.

As much as I hate my hometown, I quite liked the few years when I would come back home from Uni and go to the pub on Christmas Eve and see a bunch of people from high school and catch up with them (then feel superior to them for having a much more interesting life :basil:)

However, no one who left ever goes back now, and so many have now popped out kids that they don't want to go out at all now on Christmas Eve.

God yes, peak late teens early twenties Christmas Eve nights out were amazing reunion events. Everyone is a fucking parent now and settled. Including me!

Whizzer and Chips or Cor! for me, but those annuals were a proper highlight for me every year.

I think Christmas TV was always pretty shit, but it always seemed very special. Now it's very rare that anything seems very interesting.

YES I AM WEARING ROSE TINTED GLASSES.

Colour coding who in the family wanted to watch or record what in the Radio Times, pre-labelling blank VHS cassettes to make sure we had enough space.

Christmas TV and the big network film premieres are so underwhelming now everything is so accessible all the time.
The Christmas Radio Times in itself was an absolute event.

Mr L still subscribes to it, but the Christmas one is the only one I read.

Being dragged with my Dad around M&S lingerie department on Christmas Eve, being asked if I thought this would fit my mother, or if she'd like it.

The TOTP Christmas Special (1996 especially)
70s/80s/90s kids TV (I've just rewatched The Box of Delights and Five Children & It)
Mortal Kombat Deception/Bully - I got both for Christmas and basically lived on them throughout the week until New Year
Working Men's Clubs on boxing day :disco:
Going into town really early on 23rd December for breakfast at the Coop Department Store (Which sadly closed down and then burned to the ground a few years ago)
Going to the farm shop on Christmas Eve to fetch the cock and have breakfast in the cafe there.

I quite liked the predictability of our family Christmas schedule; for a long time it was exactly the same in terms of who we'd visit or would visit us on any given day from Christmas Eve until the 28th or so. And we absolutely weren't allowed to see friends or do anything else during that period.

Breaking the friends rule on both Xmas Eve and Day felt DISRUPTIVE.

Our Xmas Eve is essentially the same as we had 40 years ago, expect adapted and improved!

Nativity plays. Both at school but for me more so with my church Sunday School.

I think I played just about every role in the church nativity.

Except the one I wanted :(

I think my favourite Christmas ever was 1996. Everything felt CORRECT that year; I remember going out with friends in the couple of days up to Christmas Eve and everything just feeling mega exciting. It's why 2 Become 1 holds such a special place in my heart, because that video just seemed to be everywhere and it always reminds me of that specific point in time.

Also: the Folk of the Faraway Tree books used to be essential reading in the run-up.

I played servant #3 to the three wise men in our nativity. My one line was in a scene where the three wise men called in with BABOOSHKA. I'm not sure that is an official CoE sanctioned part of the Christmas story.

Anyway, I tripped over my cape and forgot my line.

I’d say Lilt is probably better than caviar.
I mean is caviar totally tropical? Didn’t think so

Ah, Christmas 1996 was the last time I got a proper big present from the parents, which was my first PC all for myself (birthday and Christmas combined of course).

All the computers we’d had before belonged to my brother or dad’s work laptops, so this was so huge. I just remember ICQ chats and playing with Worms, an Encyclopaedia CD Rom and various fancy screen savers, until it actually got useful when Napster launched a few years later.

I remember me and my brother desperately craving a Commodore 64

And getting a ZX Spectrum :(

Carol singing in the maternity hospital opposite the church on Xmas Eve, followed by the watchnight service. Xmas Day was usually at ours cos we had the most space. We had the same visitors on Boxing Day until 1997. New Year's Day was a quick 'round trip of my mum's aunt and my gran and grandpa.

Always the same, never a chore, expect for that year I got absolutely fucking wasted at New Year and had to do the trawl anyway. 1st Jan 1990. The Fall were in session on Peel that day.

I do remember the year we did the nativity in the sanctuary of the church rather than the hall downstairs. My brother was Joseph, I was the innkeeper. We drew out the relevant scene for far longer than we should have, much to our amusement but no-one else's.

My mum always insisting on inviting some lonely old people from the church to Christmas or Boxing Day lunch if they didn’t have anywhere to go. As a selfish child I did not want to spend the day with random old people. Now I realise my mum is just a fucking lovely person.
