ALSO ALSO I couldn't help but wonder if this film might introduce the concept of cellulite to young girls, thus prompting concerns about their own bodies 🥴

This shit is sold out everywhere (not fully sold out but like 90% of every screening today within the city) and on a Monday nonetheless.

what a strange takeaway... it was a throwaway line...

anyway I loved this. it's just really joyous good fun with a decent message. nothing MINDBLOWING but honestly Margot Robbie is such a movie STAR in the big old-school way that she can sell the shit out of basically anything. and Greta's script, direction and visuals were really charming too. it felt like a film she made that she and other women would've wanted to see as a kid. I especially liked the quieter moments like the first interaction with Ruth, her creator, at the Mattel office, and the moment she tells the old woman at the bus stop she's beautiful. felt like a film with a lot of humanity.

and the final scene at the gynaecologist was SUCH a gag. played so cleverly and off-hand. I can't believe I've encountered discourse about whether it was TRANSPHOBIC! for fuck's sake!

8/10. Margot deserves an Oscar nom.

God this movie is fucking UNAVOIDABLE.

There are actual editorials on LinkedIn from people debating whether toxic masculinity prevents men from going to see Barbie.

NO actually, I just don’t want to see it because it’s a movie about a hundred year old DOLL!

Fuck OFF

I love seeing all the usual suspects trying to get upset about this. Worth it for that alone. That and some of the decent boo on the soundtrack.

Yes, because they’re not on TikTok and Instagram day and night, are they

NAUGHTY BARBIE!

I just don’t understand why straight men might not want to see Barbie and might prefer to go to the match with the lads instead. That’s CIS SCUM for you :):):)

It is weird that women still do see the super masculine brainless action fodder that is mostly aimed at teenage boys. Even if lots of other people would prefer a nice romantic comedy instead, you don’t get them all over the Internet angrily proclaiming that the Fast & Furious films were not made for them and the hype surrounding them is offensive.

Either way, it’s really quite ironic considering the satirical plot of this film :D

I think it’s absolutely FINE to go watch Barbie if it floats your boat as a man either because it’s retro and fun or because you want to see Margot Robbie in knickers, but don’t ASSUME that if it’s not your flavour that you have some Freudian anti-pink machismo anxiety!

Social media won’t be happy until absolutely EVERYONE EVER is cancelled!

(Obviously the real reason I’m not going is because I’ve never forgiven Mattel for discontinuing He-Man in 1989)

:D That’ll show THEM!

And yes, let’s just cancel EVERYONE EVER to render the whole concept UTTERLY NULL AND VOID :disco:

Aren’t we supposed to be CANCELLING CINEMA in support of the actors and writers anyway?

Honestly I can’t keep up!

Oh surely not (:D)

I shall flounce down to the Ciné Lumière RIGHT NOW to stand outside hopping up and down and of course SCREAM IN PEOPLE’S FACES AND STEADFASTLY REFUSE TO ENTER INTO DIALOGUE as is the incredibly effective method of protesting DU JOUR :disco:

Get a grip it’s just a movie.

Also could you all CALM DOWN - we’re not all here for hysterics

:kim:

64!

Seeing this tonight as well.

Did we all know Barbie is based on a German novelty doll based on a comic strip about a high-end sex worker/gold-digger? Only in Germany...

I loved it. I laughed a lot, but I didn't like the Will Ferrell scenes and some of the Ken antics towards the end. America Ferrera's monologue was utterly fantastic.

Do we think this is a contender for Oscar nominations? The academy could do with lightening up ( :eyes: ) a tad and throwing a few nods it's way might be fun.

Production, costume, editing, make up and hair, sound, original song for Billie Eilish seem like a given. America Ferrera for supporting actress perhaps.
