The By-elections Thread - 2019-2024 edition

I mean, obviously Dorries was an embarrassment and Pincher was a sex pest but the Conservatives have won seats where the candidate was both of these things so...

"It was a stunningly bad night for the Conservative Party. Historically bad.

If replicated at a general election, results like last night’s wouldn’t just mean Conservative defeat - they would mean Conservative annihilation"

What a glorious night.

Clearly they're both relatively marginal now and I wouldn't be surprised if they switch back on a GE scenario, but it is fantastic. If Rishi took the Uxbridge result to declare a war on meat taxes and ULEZ, what on earth will he take from this?

Tamworth, the second highest swing in post war by-election history and Mid Beds the sixth. Quite the stat.

He sounds like a prize shit mind.

Have Nadine Dorries boiled down into pate

Declare a culture war and a ban on red-haired men

Looking forward to getting home from work so I can read all these Tweets!

The Tory majority has shrunk by 21 since 2019. That, I think are about the same numbers John Major lost, albeit under a much smaller majority.

The key difference, IIRC was most of the pre-1997 changes were due to deaths and defections. The pre-2024 lot are mostly down to explusions.

One reading is that the pre 1997 MPs were older and more principled. The pre 2024 lot are younger careerists and more corrupt (or at least unable to get away with it).

Interestingly those kind of swings are echoing the crazy polling we all saw when Rishi took over and thought was probably too good to be true. Turns out to be true!

What I love about it is the rejection of Tory mentality - him doing that Poor Parents Fuck Off tweet and then losing a massively safe seat is so symbolic of the state of the party and shows they STILL don’t have a fucking clue how angry people are and how out of touch they are. It’s this continued ignorance and delusion that gives me hope that this momentum really can continue into the GE…

Likely another by-election coming down the line in Wellingborough too (Peter Bone's seat), so the humiliations probably aren't over yet...

All hypothetical and stuff but what happens to the right-wing shit rags with a result like this? They really would be going against the grain with their "style" of reporting or will they just ramp up the culture wars even more?

God knows. Dont forget the Sun endorsed Blair as soon as they sensed the wind was changing to appear as is if they remained the kingmakers.

I would rank THE SNU above The Times and we all know how I feel about THEM.
