Thoughts on Oasis

I was very much team Oasis back in the 90s and I still am now. Those first couple of albums were untouchable; even if they began to tail off by that point they'd set their legacy in stone. Don't Look Back In Anger remains one of the greatest moments in the history of music.

The problem with them was getting caught up with being the football terrace anthem poster boys at the peak of their success and it showed on albums 3 and 4. When they pulled things back and allowed themselves to still be influenced by their 60s heroes, they did some great stuff in the 00s. I really like their more psychedelic and blatantly Lennonesque tracks, whether they're from 1994 or 2008.
 
Who Feels Love is probably the only Oasis noughties single I enjoyed. It's also probably the most forgotten, but hey ho.
 
I've seen (stupid, drunk) friends get into near-fisticuffs about these guys, and I still don't understand why they elicit such polarising reactions. They're neither the Coldplay of the 90s nor the second coming of the Beatles imo. Just a decent band who were operating far beyond their base level for their first two records. Perhaps I'm lucky in that I managed to avoid the media-saturation surrounding their ascendance and pomp - my first memories of them coincide with their slow decline, although I remember their being the fave band of like, everyone's older sibling even during that extended hangover period. I might have more of an emotional response if I'd witnessed it all firsthand. As it stands, I can appreciate those early songs without any fuss, but they strike me as by far the least interesting out of the Britpop giants (Blur, Suede, Pulp in that order for me). Credit where it's due, though - the big hitters have mostly stood the test of time, and I often feel that 'Don't Look Back in Anger' is the de facto national anthem. Play that song in any pub anywhere in the world and watch all the basic Brits (myself included) forgive them everything post-95 and temporarily unite in some sort of Union Jack-waving euphoric catharsis. I've seen this happen/instigated such antics in the Okavango bloody Delta amongst other places so I will not accept that I'm wrong!

Actually, I'd say their classic 'sound' is evocative of happier, more innocent times in general - take me back to the 90s plz! There's some residual affection for that as well. And if I can come up with ten songs I like for any major artist (cos I can't for most) then they can't be that bad:

Also LOVE the number of Americans I've encountered in life who try to convince me that they're conversant in the UK indie scene of the 90s by declaring their undying adoration for 'Wonderwall'! :disco:
 
I loved "D'You What I Mean?" by the way. It's so hilariously bombastic that you can't help but get carried away with it - the bridge section ("I met my maker...") is properly ecstatic and it sounds like the studio is about to collapse. Fabulous stuff and well worth the 7 minutes too.

You can smell the cocaine and benson when you listen to it.
 
I think they were essentially the Spice Girls for straight men currently in their late 30s to mid 40s. They represent that period of the mid-late 90s to a similar degree, and there's clearly a huge amount of nostalgia tied to people's feelings towards them, especially if you're the kind of person who suspects that their life probably peaked around that time.

I like a lot of Oasis songs (the first 2 albums and the b-sides that get talked about)

I like a lot of britpop. A lot of it is great pop music, and there isn’t any cultural baggage to it here

1. Pulp
2. Sleeper
3. Suede
4. Blur
5. Oasis
 
Sadly, part of my learning during the TOTP repeats getting up to 1996 has been that Oasis really genuinely were the absolute tits in the mid-90s :(
 
There were the point men of a huge swathe of genuinely amazing music. I also think Liam has turned out to be a genuinely amazing human. (Noel is a tory cunt though)
 
Given that the album was released on 29/08/1994 and the announcement is tomorrow I reckon they're reuniting for a one-off Definitely Maybe 30 gig or something.
And then see where it goes from there.
I don't think they're ready to get in the studio together.

girl with the money they could make it's gonna be a FULL TOUR / WEMBLEY RESIDENCY!
 
I see that Noel has just had to pay a handsome amount to his ex wife so am assuming that is the driving force behind it all.
 
It's a full tour, allegedly. The usual summer circuit of European festivals with stadiums and outdoor gigs in the UK.

They've supposedly booked 10 nights but remember you need to book a couple of days to build yr stage and then dismantle it again.

I feel this will heavily reduce the likelihood of race riots next Summer
