Name a singer who isn’t objectively great “singer” whose voice you love

I actually prefer a objectively lesser voice as far as listening to a whole album goes (see Faye vs Claire, Britney vs Christina etc)
 
Sonic Youth's frontline: Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo and, to a much lesser extent Thurston Moore who is quite annoying sometimes.
 
Madonna was the first to spring to mind although you'd argue she is a great singer - because being a vocalist requires lots of different facets and for me Madonna excels in:

- having a distinct, singular voice
- being able to emote
- being able to adapt to and fit different genres authentically

So yeah maybe she is already a great singer. I've seen her listed in a few different "greatest singers" lists from various mags. I mean if you can list Bob Dylan and David Bowie, you can certainly list Madonna.

Great choices. Susannah Hoffs is kinda like Madonna. Her voice is pure SEX. Also didn't she broaden her pitch when she went solo so she wasn't always so squeaky? I'm not massively familiar with her work but her voice is very distinct and enjoyable.

I'm a bit like @dUb in that I'm drawn to strong vocalists so there aren't that many I can think of. I mostly listen to great singers.

This is why I can struggle with a thread like this. There are singers who I would agree who are technically strong but who singularly fail to emote (for me, ar least) or connect in any meaningful way with a lyric, and those who are not great technically, but absolutely can read and deliver a lyric which emotionally floors you.

So deciding who is a better singer, or who has done their job better is a strange one.
 
Lisa Marie Presley. I genuinely liked a lot of what she released, and her deep voice was gorgeous on record. Not brilliant live, but she really found her niche for her third and final album. Wish she had been able to do more.

Maybe a little too wispy and high-pitched for some but I've always found her voice pretty.
 
I’m having one of my periodic Pet Shop Boys phases right now so I’d have to say Neil Tennant, as marmite as his vocals are I think he’s wonderfully expressive.

You might even say he really has made such a little go a VERY LONG WAY. :basil:
