How on earth did this get here?

It is pure pop make no mistake, but I don't think I'd recognise her if I lived with her. There's also not an original idea in the whole song :disco:

 
442 Atomic Kitten - Whole Again (2001)

The words 'iconic' and 'legendary' get tossed about on a regular basis, but when all is said and done, is there anything that stands up to this megahit? The answer is of course "OMD wrote this?"

It would likely be even higher if drunken YouTube plays were included. I can't explain it, and I certainly don't care for them. I bought the CD single of this in Central London, while the May Day riots of 2001 were happening outside. I was not kettled.

 
441 Adam Rickitt - I Breathe Again (1999)

YOU, I WANNA TAKE YOU TO A GAY BAR, said the writers of this song about the song. And that they did, much to Rickett's later chagrin, who had no idea this piece of Hi-NRG europop would appeal to homosexuals, let alone the video of him trapped without his clothes in a glass box.

Well shame on him, the gays lapped this rubbish up, particularly, IIRC one of my local councillors and former Moopy posters.

 
440 Alphabeat - The Spell (2009)

I wasn't very interested in Fascination. The second album, with the same name was far more down my street. Lots of 90s dance pastiches, including this. This is very Black Box :disco:

 
438 Donna Summer - I Don't Want To Get Hurt (1989)

The second single from her legendary SAW album "Another Place and Place". By this stage Summer, who I presume was somewhat "difficult" had declined to appear in the video, leaving it to a bunch of available late 80s models. She didn't care for the track apparently and a US release was cancelled. Which is foolish, as this is great SAW-by-numbers.

 
437 Steps - Better Best Forgotten (1999)

The last single of five releases, from their debut album. Unapologetic, euphoric, four-to-the-floor, big gay dance pop. The arrival of Steps as a chart force, was such a pleasure for teenage Ag; as much as I loved Britpop, it was always balanced with a healthy dose of Ace of Base or 2 Unlimited. Steps brought pop joy home.

 
436 Toni Braxton - He Wasn't Man Enough For Me (2000)

After a decade of big big ballads, Toni met the challenge of a new decade with a slickly produced Darkchild RnB banger. Sifting through the lyrical bones of The Boy Is Mine, this is just so so good. Did we ever find why she disappeared? (The only story I know is that her tits exploded)

The album version is great, but the single mix just sounds a bit lifeless & a little TOO SAW by numbers
 
Toni is still out and about, getting abused by her sister Tamar in the name of reality television. Why she stopped releasing albums is a mystery however. She kept producing good music right up to and including her last record.

Many still believe this to be the most important record of the 1990s, if not ever. The Queen famously said that if she'd heard this the night before Diana died, she might not have killed her.

First things first. 434th? Booking in a confession with Andrew Scott as we speak. The story of course goes that Siobhán was absolutely hammered during the making of the video. At the time I worked as her body double and she made me match her drink for drink. I was 11. In many ways that's where my problems began and I regret nothing.

A Clubland cover of a Deborah Cox track. Never quite broke through, but honestly, of the genre, it's absolutely peak. @ButterTart to confirm.

You know looking up the videos for these, I'm getting rather tired of the top comment being "Who is here for this in 2025?", so it was refreshing to see this:

A really gorgeous defiant but definitely sad bop, laden with synths and autotune. Definitely my favourite effort so far from the queen of bad bangs.

 
430 Scooch - More Than I Needed To Know (2000)

What the world really needed at the turn of the century was a pastiche of Steps. And for one and a half songs they were absolutely correct. This was the song people obviously thought they were sending to Eurovision rather than the absolute toot they did go with. Always amused to see that many of the members were only disguised as young people.

 
429 Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way (1986)

There's a substantial minority of songs listed here that I very much knew, and the multiple old TOTP appearances elevated them. This is definitely one of them. God bless wee Dame Jimmy.

 
427 Kylie Minogue - Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi (1988)

Ah the one from her first album that fans claim has aged like fine wine. Of course it's been rebranded as a SAD BOP, and it absolutely works among Robyn et al. One of the first singles I ever owned (on 12" no less). Easily one of my favourite early Kylie videos. ARE YOU SURE YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE?



Worth noting that one the demos is out there, which isn't bad, just a case of SAW throwing everything at it, before discovering subtlety.

 
426 The La's - There She Goes (1988)

I'm always partial to a bit of melancholic jangle pop. I can forgive a lot, but one of them went on to form CAST, the most pointless and truly terrible Britpop players. The lead guy has gone the same way as the Reynold Girls and Gina G - disappeared into absolute anonymity.

 
425 CHVRCHES - Recover (2013)

CHVRCHES are basically Saint Etienne for young millenials. Couldn't catch a hit if they paid for it, but my God they have fabulous tunes by the skip load. Crisp, sparkling chiming synths, bittersweet and vulnerable lyrics, what's not to love?

424 Antony & Cleopatra - Why Don't You Just Call Me (2019)

Another of my ASFM alumni. It's a bop and a half, although I was always uneasy at the pairing. Not one of my favourite Shakespeare films.

Some peak young Whitney, infectious, bouyant, radiant. What more to say, she was such a bright young thing. I had no idea this was intended for Janet Jackson (evil).

There She Goes always reminds me of my favourite 90s docu-soap, Holiday Reps, which sadly only ran for 1 series on the BBC in 1997.
