The Whitney perf really is oddly lifeless for such a dynamic song/performer.

Jamie Theakston is on my shit list now with his Jo Whiley-esque editorialising about how that Blur dirge would be #1 if there was any justice.

The correct subject for that statement is obviously CHER.
 
Gail Porter with her “I like them so you should too” on Stereophonics.

Agree with Whitney. It just feels flat. Even more so on a third showing!

Fran Healey looking VERY young in that Travis performance. Or perhaps I'm just getting old...

I wonder if it was choice or circumstance that led them to completely withdraw from the spotlight? They really were SO big at that moment, but unlike Chris Martin and Coldplay, they pretty much vanished once their run was over...

They've never stopped releasing music have they? Every few years a new album I believe. I think the difference between Coldplay and Travis was that Coldplay sustained their success. People just lost interest in Travis after 2 albums no? Anyway I always found them dull as so no great loss.
 
The lovely Kele Le Roc. There was a remix of this one that had a significantly longer shelf life than the rest of her career, I believe.

I'm intrigued by how the non-singing Lynch sister from B*witched appears to be transforming ever more into a lesbian bouncer with each single they release.

Blame It On The Weatherman obviously their finest hour.
 
We've given up the 90s TOTPs at the moment and have headed back to the 70s ones BBC4 are showing again. 1976 currently.

It's interesting having watched back from the start of the when BBC4 started showing them regularly in the mid 70s (presumably tapes being destroyed before then) how the charts have always been pretty batshit, and how rose tinted memories become.

For every Fox S-S-S-Single Bed by Fox you get a Robin Sarstedt's My Resistance Is Low.
 
I was thinking that too while watching, I've never liked his voice but that was one of his very worst recorded vocals.

Hurrah for Steps with their identikit yet different clothed performance. They obvs got the memo that performances were repeated. Harsh early fade out though. Appalled at the woman in blue in the corner who is clapping with all the enthusiasm of a sulky child.

Erm Fran from Travis was err hot twink? And then James DB from Manics… is it me or were both mining? I don’t mind the wistful nature of Writing to Reach You.

I could have done without the video AGAIN of Britney. Just play As by George and Mary instead. Also no Britney the camera angle is all wrong to see what’s up with you. All I can see is you’re sat on a chair with a granny cover over the headrest.

I guess Andy Williams was a car advert. Shame Kele Le Roc didn’t get another single after two top 10s. Underworld I’ve never got the appeal.

That Whitney performance again?! I think part of what makes it feel lacklustre is the crowd literally just standing still. Then compare that to Tina Cousins who got everyone raving. A shame she didn’t get bigger. I guess too dance for the Pop crowd and too pop for the dance crowd.

I remember watching the mid seventies eps with my dad and it quashed any argument that he had about popular music being significantly better in the past.
 
I mean I'd agree with your dad in as much as I prefer that music - but it's just a preference. And what these shows prove is that as time goes on you forget the shit and think only of the good stuff. Because utter tripe is pretty much a constant.
 
They did show a lot of old toot that got nowhere near the charts in those days though. The Surprise Sisters were a relative HIT reaching the giddy heights of NUMBER THIRTY EIGHT

It was their previous single that got to #38 wasn't it? This one was a flop. I had to look it up after becoming slightly obsessed with them.

Honestly though, I AM finding myself missing the guest hosts era a fair bit. Bring back the joys of RHONA CAMERON gushing on national television about how much she wanted Sharleen Spiteri to thrum her off!
 
Saving these up and watching them in one go isn't sensible. Sick to fucking death of When You're Gone again, 27 years later.

It's not like it was a GREAT SONG to begin with but BILLY could get away with it. YOU CAN'T
 
Oh there I was thinking When The Going Gets Tough was probably the most tolerable of the Boyzone oeuvre :D (bar the majestic A DIFFERENT BEAT obviously :disco:)

I can only put it down to fond RED NOSE DAY MEMORIES
 
I was and remain a huge fan of Des'ree re-releasing the same song 17 times under the pretence that they were "remixes" despite sounding identical to the original.

That aside though, "You Gotta Be" finally becoming a top ten hit did feel right.
