Robyn - TOP TEN ALBUM “Sexistential”

I’m starting to wonder if she’s actually written a single new song since 2018? Didn’t she say one of Dopamine or Talk To Me had been written about a decade ago as well?
 
Dopamine was written before Honey but I think most of the album was done in the last couple of years. she spoke of changing directions quite late in the day
 
I wish I could get excited for the album, but it's just not happening for me.
 
I’m not the biggest Robyn fan, but I’ve always respected her and there’s always been something to enjoy or even love from every album. But so far these 3 songs have left me completely cold. I can’t quite put my finger on why, it’s not like it’s a massive creative shift, but something is missing.
 
I think part of the problem is that there are these huge gaps between albums and her sound hasn't really caught up. I don't want anything revolutionary, but a bit of evolution after years and years wouldn't go amiss. I like the songs so far but I agree, it's hard to get excited by them (or by the aesthetic to be honest!)
 
I felt this way about Honey, to be honest, and this has just taken that further. Shame.
 
I agree with all of you (except Sheena about Honey!). Talk to Me is really good but the other singles have left me cold - Dopamine is good but I haven't been going back - and we've heard 4/9 songs at this point. track by track reviews suggest at least another 1-2 are quite slight/fillerish.

so we're waiting on... what? a couple of great songs on a 9 track album that's been almost as many years in the making?
 
It's just this upcoming album that's been a long 8 year wait, but all her others have averaged 4 or so years. That's not too atypical is it?
 
The gap from Honey to Sexistential is about the same as from Body Talk to Honey, isn't it? Even if that was slightly muddied by the nature of Body Talk's release. And Robyn was 5 years before that, although that is also clouded by the international release going on for a period of years. And the albums prior to that are pretty irrelevant, I'd argue.

So essentially you've got four albums over a period of 21 years. And Body Talk aside, not particularly packed albums at that.

And I'd agree with @Iguana that that kind of exposes a lack of development that you don't really notice in the same way when artists release every 2 years or so.
 
I still think Honey was a bit of a masterpiece, but I wish she'd put half the effort into promoting that album that she's put into promoting this one.
 
Well, I'm enjoying it as a whole album on first listen. Really Real is great and I'd have led with it - it shows some progression and even has a little Act of Contrition hellish guitar moment. Definitely think it works better as an album than a individual singles.

Generally no surprises. Light Up gives me classic Robyn, Body Talk vibes.
 
Sucker for Love is wonderful. also love Really Real and Into the Sun. it's a good, tight, solid album. career best? no but that's OK.
 
Loving “Don’t Mean a Thing” as a standout on first listen but the whole thing makes me want to get my tits out.
 
It felt like a long 29 minutes to me, but I mean that in a good way - it feels substantial.

I'd highlight It Don't Mean A Thing as well.
 
I think releasing Blow My Mind as the pre-release grat track was a mistake really. It did nothing to make the prospect of this album more exciting to fans, and I say that as somebody who loves the original from Don't Stop The Music.

It's a solid Robyn album on first listen. Needs more time to bed in, but I'm relieved.
 
Gave this a couple of plays in the gym and I do like it. It is ultimately inessential really if you have or play her previous catalogue and I feel I’ll need to remind myself to play it.

Listening to the album it fits in just fine, but spotlighting it makes no sense. Literally multiple better options.

I'm so pleased with the album, definitely exceeds my slightly waning expectations.

loving the album already. Sucker for Love really is right up there... such a gorgeous synthline. Light Up is a huge grower too.
 
that's an absolutely fantastic chat. the bit where she finds it far too cringey to name an underrated Robyn song so the interviewer does it for her :D
