Old TOTP (BBC4) (1 Viewer)

I actually bought 1,000 Clowns :shy:

And I haven't thought about it in 20 years, but now I've got a laconic "OKAY" repeating in my head and I don't hate it even if he is Jonathan Creek

That poor uncredited backing singer on 911's Private Number. She sang half the song!

I didn't even like Geri's song but she deserved number 1 over more nasal boring Boyzone shite that's not been played since it departed the charts.

Ruined the Anne Murray original of course - she'd be turning in her grave if she was dead. She's not, although hearing Ronan's vocal tics might just finish her off.

God Bryan Adams really was going through a midlife crisis of hilarious proportions in 1999, wasn't he? What is this look?!

Bryan wasn't even 40 then!

The crisis makes sense after the poor git had had to spend his entire thirties pretending to be elderly. Realistically he probably identified more with Chicane and Spice Girls and Ibiza remixes far more than duetting with Rod Bloody Stewart, as most 30-somethings would have.

Fierce were an odd one. A bunch of mid-charting singles, then as soon as they actually had a big hit they vanished!

It really adds insult to injury for poor Geri that even by Boyzone standards, You Needed Me is absolute BILGE.

Let’s be fair, Shania should have been #1. Had it been the streaming ‘era’ and not down to fanbase, it possibly would have been.

As far as I remember one of the ladies unfortunately had a miscarriage around/just after Sweet Love and quit the music scene and was replaced by a new member but it never really got off the ground and they and the label quickly lost interest.

Moya Brennan literally giving Enya tribute act for this Chicane perf :disco:

(Although I suppose she'd argue that Enya is HER much more financially successful tribute act!)

A very lovely Chicane performance though distracted by the bouffant of one of the backing sisters. I felt Moyà/ Maire needed her mic turning up a bit. Whilst some bits were mimed the actual live bits seemed quiet?

No to Wiseguys. They probably were science teachers in real life.

Sixpence None The Richer I was just seeing Jane Horrocks.

At the risk of Moopy BLASPHEMY and being exiled from a certain sub-forum

Saltwater is the best song performed by a Brennan

I did enjoy that second episode this week. My favourite Shed Seven and Jamiroquai songs, and one of Supergrass' best, but most importantly of course TRANCE BANGER FEATURING ENYA'S SISTER.

Only a couple of weeks til a1’s debut 😍😍😍😍 (though I think I’ll be on holiday)

My God, the full-body cringe I just experienced watching 'Twenty-first Century Girls' :zombie:

Totally tracks that they were a Simon Cowell creation. I'm the furthest thing from a purist, but it's totally riot grrrrl as envisioned by somebody who has absolutely no idea what riot grrrl is, but has vaguely heard that there might be some money in it.

Cher really worked the Believe album in this country!

All or Nothing a total forgotten gem in her catalogue.

Was it 21st Century Girls who were a very obvious Nepo baby (I want to say Midge Ure?) + four randoms who happened to turn up for auditions?

The song, also known as 21st Century Girls :eyes: WAS kind of a banger, but gets wetter on every re-listen in the 20-10's, 20-20's period. (Good god, I'm serving double time in @Finn's apostrophe jail). HEPBURN YOU ARE NOT

The Californication album takes me right back to trying to my high school common room. Though I think they came to it a bit later than this, I think they kept spinning singles off it for about 18 months...

Genuine LOL at them trying to get some crowd dancing shots out of Baz Luhrmann's Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen. :D

Was this the start of “ban lip-synching now” or did that come later?

Felt the pop acts in today’s first ep were a lot more live than they would have done previously?

“Who do you think you’re fooling” says Cher not even bothering to have a mic on her in episode two.

First episode was great - did we actually have two consecutive studio performances? 21st Century Girls straight out of the focus group - especially the spoken word bit in the middle.

Did episode two have any actual filmed performances bar S Club?

AI tells me Deee-Lite performed on TOTP twice (for both Groove Is In The Heart and Power of Love), but I see no trace of this being true. It would be very weird for them to have zero UK TV performances.

God I'd forgotten just *how* pass-around party bottom-coded Adam Rickitt's performances of I Breathe Again were :D

A couple of upcoming episodes are being skipped because of the rather :ToneNervous: video to trance hit "Gouryella" being shown for a few seconds on the top 20 countdown - it seems a shame they can't just stick something over that for the couple of seconds it's on screen.

It does feel overkill. It can't be difficult in thus day and age to edit it out for the 2 seconds it would be onscreen.

I wonder if Tiesto ever gets asked about that video.

Watched that dreadful episode last night and I’m starting to think 1999 may have been one of my least favourite years ever for chart music :zombie:
