Nope, and neither were Mr Vain or Rhythm is a Dancer for example. Of course the convoluted stories of several eurodance tracks are messy and deceptive (particularly the Italian stuff), but I'd say the really big hits were all original. This was a German produced track, the only thing nicked was the iconic woe-oh-oh's.
I was AGOG to find out that Rhythm Is A Dancer apparently took the synth sound from this a few years back:

Still no word on the top 20?

I'm not sure if this is Moopy controversial or not - but The Girl And The Robot is my go-to Robyn ahead of all of her solo material. I'm going to assume the only reason Royksopp never broke in the UK is solely because we didn't know how to pronounce them.

Playlist the big 3 Haddaway singles alongside the best from the 2nd album and you have quite the collection. Shame he didn't really continue striving for this quality and style. Few tracks reach the mania of What Is Love and Rock My Heart. He is absolutely front and centre of any half decent and above 1993 dance compilation.

Funnily enough with the mention of Snap! Thea Austin worked with the Haddaway producers, but the results were more subdued.

Think maybe N-Trance Electronic Pleasure:

Maybe don't think anything and just let go:

Yes the second album singles were a big drop. But by the time it came out, that brand of eurodance was sadly dead and buried.

Catch a Fire had potential (I love it), but as you say, totally dated by this point. I didn't really like Fly Away when I first got to it years afterwards.

Coming up in the next 10: Madame Misery, a bit too much Kylie, Agnes, Kate Bush, and Pete Burns.

49 Kylie Minogue - Slow (2003)
50 Kylie Minogue - Get Outta My Way (2010)

Launching the top 50 with OH NO NOT MORE KYLIE.

Now Slow, is absolutely peak Kylie. The comeback track after the monster Fever era, no-one expected her to go in this direction. Cool as fuck, hypnotic electropop, sparse... nothing that Fever could have ever led us to believe was coming. It's absolutely top tier for me, totally future proofed, it's a 4eva Kylie moment.

Get Outta My Way is a very different bag of glitter. This is bog standard Kylie, as if that's a bad thing. It's bubbly, fun, a little sassy. I was surprised it made it this high, but the stats don't lie.

Both have great videos, Slow in particular is deeply pleasurable, because we all love men, Kylie and Barcelona.

48 Agnes - Release Me (2008)

Pop really had a dry patch in the middle 00s. Girls Aloud and Sugababes aside, dance pop was virtually dead. Thankfully we were able to look to Scandinavia (Robyn, Infernal, September) to bring the goods back, shortly before Gaga led the charge from the US.

This is an absolute classic from the era, lyrically emotional and a little desperate, sonically big dance pop in a minor key, complete with built in tension and a glorious key change. Famously in that godawful sing song film, with those godawful people, which weirdly gives me nostalgia for a simpler time.

Release Me took whatever baton Deborah Cox was carrying, snatched it and sprinted for dear life :disco:

Hate some of the witchu-ness of the pronunciations though.

This is the first time I have seen this list and I was particularly pleased to see 2 or 3 songs that surprised me but also I did a bit of vomit in my mouth when I saw 1 or 2 I particularly despise.

59 Kylie Minogue - Say Something - I love this song, it's like definitely top 10 Kylie for me.
384 Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Hypnotized - First time I heard this was live, I knew it was killer.

oh and 106 Sammy - Heaven - although I'd take the Candleflip Bootleg mix, because feels. Do we say 'feels' here?

On the hate list - I fucking hate 121. Kate Bush - This Woman's Work, it's like adult nappies Kate Bush, it's like easy readers, babies first Kate Bush. Burn it.

But worse than that, worse I think than probably anything* is 182. Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive. It smells of death.

(* down the bottom of the well with it: 4 Non Blondes - What's Going On)

47 Royksopp - What Else Is There (2005)

They've appeared so often on this list, I've ran out of synonyms for icey, but I've literally just had a revelation about this song. Musically it's an electronic symphony. Lyrically, and this is the wild part, I've only just connected the dots - it's about a car accident. I always presumed it was just another (amazing) Scandinavian loneliness track, but no it's even bleaker.

Either way, this is their last of five appearances on the list. I haven't tallied the artist totals yet, but that's pretty good for an act I couldn't pick out of a crowd.

46 Strike - U Sure Do (1994/1995)

"Striking" a very different tone, it's the trashy 90s dance classic, that had a second life in the Clubland era (less said about the LSL version).

The result of five samples including Donna Allen, Barry White and Tone Loc, it was lucky it came together to make something quite infectious. To give it credit, beyond my trashy sideswipe, it is quite joyous thirty years on.

Bought this on cassette. Joyous, as were the other 4 singles. I knew of the Donna sample, but I'm AGOG to hear of the others, although I'm assuming the let's do it bit was swiped from Tone Loc?

45 Billie Ray Martin - Your Loving Arms (1994/1995)

It’s the one you’ve been waiting for — Madame Misery’s big hit. Swirling electro-house grooves carry the track, elevated by BRM’s rich, soulful vocals. And they’re worth dwelling on: powerful and emotional, yes, but our Billie is no wailing house diva — instead, she delivers control where the lyrics themselves feel anything but.

Recently sampled for a new generation by Fred Again, but we dont talk about that here.

Apparently Dame Billie has seen some of the extensive discussions about on Moopy. If you're reading this, it's all love - this is a Billie Ray Martin fan forum.

Without checking, I believe that's the case.

I had U Sure Do on tape, but I have since picked it up on vinyl.

The only half decent mix of it is this one, which is a bit low key ravey

As far as Your Loving Arms the Junior Vasquez Soundfactory Mix is pretty lovely, which I'm sure was solely aimed at American gay dancefloors

If I remember correctly, the remixes of another 1995 purchase, Keep Warm by Jinny, were all a bit wank too excepting the Alex Party one

U Sure Do definitely goes in the thumbs up column of mid 90s big dance anthems.

That Keep Warm remix though - no

Expected to see Billie in your top ten.

Roykopp are so underrated. That’s my favourite album of their’s too.

I can't deny that remix is hard nostalgia. Mr Ag just says the bad 90s is just white noise to him.

Love Billie, but I split my time with a variety of her tracks. Obviously Arms is a staple, and Mr Ag is particularly partial to that one, so it gets bonus plays.

Röyksopp are astonishing. They're such a mood.

I much prefer the LSL version

Having Inspiration in my head before I even got to this thread..

That's an amazing write-up for Your Loving Arms. Really hits the spot - the lyrics and music spiralling out of control, but the restraint vocal verses in the middle, I've never thought of it like that before.

44 Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) (1984)

This. Is. Everything.

It's the menace of Pete Burns, it's the manic energy from the opening note, it's camper than tits - dripping in galloping technicolor hi-nrg synth, it's excess, it's gloss, it's everything.

It's just always been there and always will be.

DO enjoy the glorious 8 minute Murder Mix, because YOU deserve it.

43 Kylie Minogue - All the Lovers (2010)

Kylie does not have the best voice in the pop business. But what she does have is one of the most familiar pop voices around, and at her best she knows exactly what to do with it and how to turn it into a musical event. She serenades us, with a gentle uplift few can manage. This is a track that gently bounces us around in a utopian fentanyl induced haze, softly rimming us visually and aurally.

She's your fave, because of this.

42 De'Lacy - Hideaway (1995)

Good God, this has aged like Kylie. Progressive house really has a long sell by date and we're not there yet. Best heard at 4am or in the blazing sunshine at 4pm, it really offers and serves multiple needs. It's kinda classy, while also being charming.

Plus the LONG VERSION goes on FOREVER :disco:

I'm AGOG about STRIKE sampling BARRY WHITE's I'M GONNA LOVE YOU JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE BABE. I love both these tracks and WHERE? Is it the STRING SAMPLE?
