She's All I Ever Had was the original choice for the 2nd UK single but replaced with Shake Your Bon Bon...Must've been a fun for Europe situation :side-eye:
 
I do think boooo whenever we get some pre record by Beck or Prince as to what we could have had. Oddly Backstreet Boys Larger Than Life was not shown the other week (but seems like there was some sort of live feed performance).
 
Not sure if it's going to be an ongoing regular thing or not, but U&Eden have 6 episodes of TOTP from 1989. Potato quality, though.
 
I just watched a random one on YouTube from 1985 and my neighbour / boyhood friend’s brother was on it giving it some neck strain from his big singing.
 
Lolly's voice (plus the production on all the singles) actively hurts my ears. Still, at least it's not the SINISTER AS FUCK Big Boys Don't Cry.
 
Obviously Cliff Richard's The Millennium Prayer is unmitigated crap, but it's a prime example of how the sales only chart back then was a true democracy. Tap into a segment of the record buying market (in this case the often overlooked churchy types), & enough of them could get it to the top of the charts, regardless of radio airplay or critical maulings.
 
Obviously I wasn't there but I was thinking people would buy it because lots (not necessarily religious/church-y) suddenly felt thankful for living in two millennia, and felt like it was a nice sentiment (especially with the tune of Auld Lang Syne) regardless of the song quality. A bit like Candle In The Wind, not that many Elton John fans but it was for Diana, whom most people loved, there for the people. ♡

It was absolutely savaged at the time as an embarrassment of a number 1 - it sold pretty much exclusively to the Christian market.
 
I like a bit of Cliff, he’s had some genuinely fuck off good moments, but ‘hev’ because you can’t get ‘heaven’ in will always be a major crime for me.

I was just thinking - the sheer CRINGE of going into school when you just played Lolly's (underage) BOY CRUSH in this video. The other kids must have been MERCILESS

Too Much by Bros really is UTTER SHIT. And that was the lead single. There must have been a huge amount of complacency at the record label with that second album.

So I wonder if you can guess what happened next: I fly to Amsterdam for a meeting, i check into my hotel and switch the TV on while I unpack. A song plays, it is silly and European and I think - wow - well, at least I won’t have to hear that again.

And yes, it was the first time, and very definitely not the last time I heard Living La Vida Loca.

Yes. Famously a huge fan, back in the day. His original username was "Blood Cancer for Kids" but the sweet sounds of Lolly turned his whole life around.

@lolly was initially cast as Lolly, but after viewing the original rushes for the Viva La Radio video, the record label decided to move in a different direction. :(

I don't recall Progress at all! 11 year old me would have been obsessed.

It seems to be quoted a bit on chart blogs as a bloodbath week where many tracks flopped that were expected to do better, but I agree with you and don’t think many of them genuinely did. Maybe Thunderbugs or TLC ought to have had a cheeky top twenty, but aside from that only Enrique, but even he shamelessly sounded identical to his prior one. It’s more that it stopped Be With You getting a UK release which I think could’ve been a bit of a hit if he still had momentum. The fact Rhythm Divine was #2 and a long runner in NZ that it was inescapable for me at the time so I always remember it as being big, but a quick Wiki shows it wasn’t really anywhere else.

I think B*Witched with their very average song missing the top ten was more of a headline chart wise to me.

I'm sorry but BANGERS, and one of their best in their discographies. I remember the big fuss about the BV video, but I didn't even mind the female model showing her tits; I wanted Lenny to get his cock out :evil:
