I think it was because she rehearsed earlier on, and wasn't going back home once she got there. Plus it must be quite awkward just sitting there on your own for ages, especially if not someone who wanders around the church exploring other stuff whilst you wait.
(That's what I did after choir on Sundays in childhood/early teens, waiting to be picked up more interesting than waiting at school.)
