New Prince album “Timeless” - all new material

There really isn’t enough discussion on moopy about Prince, just saying

How do you get a coherent album of 10 tracks recorded over 39 years, by someone who has mountains of unreleased music?

I still don’t even know who is actually in charge of his estate. Does anyone? And since Tyka died and he left no will, the beneficiaries are just percentages scattered around a bunch of half siblings he barely knew.

I would rather they release material from specific eras and in chronological order if it had to be split, not have a mere 10 songs spanning 4 decades. Not listened yet.

I think I’d prefer an era album, like taking a bunch of cast offs from one or two albums of the same era and engineering them. Or even give them to a producer he liked to package them up properly.

But I won’t be turning down any new music, NO SIR

I thought the vibe was no madey uppey albums that didn’t exist thus the whole just added tracks approach.

With This Tear sounds like a made for Disney track

Stone is pretty good on first listen except for that wood block beat running through the whole thing

Yes, but look at how well the bonus disc of Purple Rain hangs together. It’s basically an album in its own right. See also the expanded Sign O The Times.

Can’t they just continue with special editions and add on tracks associated with that era? Around The World In a Day, Parade, and Love Symbol are major ones that still haven’t been done.

The Purple Rain and 1999 special editions were really great and affordable, so I imagine they sold a lot more than the overpriced stuff that followed. As cool as they were, we don’t need those insanely massive and expensive boxes that they did with SOTT and Diamonds and Pearls.

There are still known unreleased songs that fans have had as bootlegs for decades, that we’d love decent mastered versions to be officially released.

So this is out next week! Still don’t know if we’re getting remastered sessions from a particular era or just a smattering of random tracks pulled from the vault. I’ll take it ALL thanks

It seems like they want to pivot from the lots of extra unreleased tracks on boxsets to made-up albums which, I don't mind as long as tthey keep pumping it out - there have been some incredible releases over the past 10 years song wise.

It's quite sad the complete lack of interest in this. Including from Moopy.

There are some GREAT songs on this album. And the fans have pieced together the background of each song. It appears the album is mostly in chronological order, depending on where you classify the origin of each song.

I Am You - 1977
Very early Prince — essentially pre-For You. Originally thought to be a 1978 home recording, but Charles Spicer confirmed at Celebration 2026 that the recording dates to 1977. It wasn't part of any known For You configuration.

Tick, Tick, Bang - 1981
The really interesting one. The Timeless version is the original 1981 recording, from Prince's Kiowa Trail home studio, during the same period as Controversy. It was subsequently completely re-recorded in 1989 and that later version became the one released on Graffiti Bridge.

Heaven - 1985
Recorded at Sunset Sound on 26 May 1985, during the Parade/Sign o' the Times period. It was later considered for the abandoned The Dawn film project.

I Wonder - 1989
Recorded at Paisley Park on 5 August 1989. Interestingly, Prince revisited it in 1991–92 and added instrumentation, but Timeless uses the original sparse 1989 version.

With This Tear - 1991
November 1991 at Paisley Park, with Clare Fischer's orchestration added in early 1992. It was written as a song for another artist and eventually became a Celine Dion song.

Stone - 1995
Paisley Park, spring/summer 1995. Connected to Sandra St. Victor and the Playtime By Versace project, then briefly appeared in a 1996 configuration of Emancipation before being removed.

Calabama - 2003
Paisley Park, during the period immediately before Musicology. It appears to have been the title track of a completely unreleased Calabama album/project.

The Guilty Ones - 2007
Paisley Park, 26 October 2007. Ian Boxill engineered it; Cora Coleman-Dunham and Josh Dunham play drums/bass, with Marva King and Shelby J. on backing vocals.

Bestest Friend - 2012
Paisley Park, 3 September 2012. Chris James, who worked on Timeless, actually recorded this session himself.

How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore? (Live) - 2016
4 March 2016, Oracle Arena, Oakland — from the Piano & a Microphone period, just weeks before Prince's death.

I bought it and yes, definitely some good stuff, but the lack of interest is surely because a) a lot of the stuff was already available as bootlegs I believe and b) the strange and (fairly unrelated) track listing. It really doesn’t hang together that well in my opinion.

I Am You is the standout for me. It’s top notch.

I do think they should continue with the album reissues, though, as they’ve been curated beautifully. It seems strange we still don’t have a Purple Rain super mega deluxe.

Also it's got an awful cover. If your going to do made up albums then at least do all you can to make them look compelling.
