Taylor Swift - The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore (2 Viewers)

We were foolish to think she would be satisfied with just the 47 existing re-issues

These are probably just leftovers of what would’ve been on the reputation (Taylor’s version). I’d rather she just delete The Last Showgirl and give us a decent album. I haven’t listened to it since December.

Genuinely the kind of graphic design the washed up Melfest stars use for their supergroup tours of the hits of ATOMIC KITTEN.
Oh I dunno I think the artwork is fun if you look it at as a budget Kylie 2005 throwback 💅

The new songs sound like they’re from a different album because they’re not AWFUL

this is actually very good. catchy, well sung, extremely well produced with some gorgeously soft little moments. lyrics a bit annoying but this is just how she writes now.

Cleveland! - aggressively shit, as indicated by the punctuation
Pink Clouding - cute chorus
Babylon - how many times has she made this exact song? I don't get how it's not boring for her...

These didn’t leave much of an impression on me the first listen. I liked “patient zero”, “Cleveland”, “pinkclouding” fine but nothing immediately that excited me. “Babylon” is like the chatgbt T Swift that instagram is currently mocking her for. It’s kind of jarring how quickly Olivia Rodrigo is usurping her in quality and as a creative force, which is ironic given Déjà vu gate.

I'll leave aside her being an objectively appalling human being, but for the life of me, I will never understand how SO many people get SO excited about an artist who is this banal and limited in her "art". Everything she does is fine, but I truly don't understand how that translates into the level of megastardom and sales that she has achieved. Her voice is ok. Her songs are mostly fine, rarely more than that. She's not some sort of jaw dropping performer. She's deeply uninteresting and doesn't seem to stand for anything.

What is the appeal? Or IS that the appeal??

She was always one of those “she’s just like me” normal girl artists. She’s somehow managed to keep that going even though she’s certainly nothing like us anymore.

I’d generally agree with that assessment for this album, but that kind of ignores her run from Red to Midnights, which is a genuinely superb run of pop albums. 1989, folklore would be somewhere on my all time list. And she genuinely was becoming among the best pop songwriters of her peers with folklore, and then suddenly the wheels kind of just came off and the marketing / brand / quantity /$$$ / Easter eggs became more important to her than anything else.

And I know I’m in the minority but I like TTPD too once you trim the bloat.

Oh I'm definitely not saying that she hasn't made very good music. She absolutely has and I've enjoyed some of it for sure. It's more that I just don't think that the music, or anything else about her, should have propelled her to the gigantic megastardom she has. With massive stars with enduring careers in the past, you could absolutely see why they were so adored(Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince etc.) and so groundbreaking in an artistic and performing sense, but Swift just seems so ordinary next to those artists, and yet she's undeniably HUGE. I'm struggling to understand how she's continued to do it.

I think her earlier songs really captured something that people wanted with storytelling that wasn’t being offered by other artists. Her various heartbreaks made her relatable and the awww shucks thing (as annoying as it was) made her feel non-threatening. The Kayne incident cemented her as the underdog people could get behind.

I don’t think she has that MAGIC like a Michael, Madonna, etc but I think she has something special.

we're comparing pears and tangerines. of course she has it.

Well, I woke up to my X timeline dragging her relentlessly, and honestly, I’m glad. She’s been coasting for far too long. I can’t believe she released these leftovers as a “deluxe” album. They’re so bad they wouldn’t even make the cut for a hypothetical 143: Extra Deluxe Prrr Edition.

How is this the same woman who gave us “Blank Space” and “All Too Well”?

She's very commercially minded and understands how to market herself, engage a very online fanbase and keep her streaming numbers up in a way that a lot of her peers don't.

In a way Madonna's a good comparison because while neither of them are the very best at singing or dancing or writing songs, they both understood the game they were playing and were willing to play it. It's just that the game has changed a lot.

Yeah I think comparing her to pop stars of a different era is a bit pointless.

For better or worse, she's the perfect pop star for her particular moment in time.

she might not be as much of a unicorn as Madonna or MJ etc but her instincts are something that comes around once in a generation. Her transformation from country pop teen with an awful voice to pop starlet to singer songwriter to pop juggernaut again is something that can rarely be pulled off as well as she did it. And the re-releases brought her to a whole new level. her next album will be a bit of a crossroads.
