The Conservatives: The Wilderness Years (1 Viewer)

Mind boggling that politicians don’t have the good sense to at least create a fake account if they want to fap over twinky nipples!

Sir Desmond wants to milk that teat, and who can blame him?

Penny Mordaunt’s agent: “Hey PenPen! I know things have been a bit quiet lately, but I’ve got you a fantastic TV spot, really good opportunity to showcase your sparkling personality while we prep for the relaunch. What do you say?”

Penny: “Fabulous! What could possibly go wrong?”

What was she thinking. Did she expect they were just going to talk about that time she carried a sword solemnly?

Crispin Blunt, the Tory MP (until 2024) who left his wife in 2010 "to come to terms with his homosexuality" seems to have come to terms with it - he's been charged with possession of G, meth, weed and amphetamines

I do believe some of those should be legal (not meth or G) but I choose to laugh regardless

We're through the looking glass now. Kemi Badenoch is the nation's sweetheart.

I hate to say it, but she has been increasingly impressive in the Commons. Very put together and smart. Acting like a savvy opposition leader rather than a right wing loon spurting the normal right wing talking points. Fear her.

The hatchet job on Polanski is absolutely outrageous. He'll never outrun the hypnotits will he?

Its wild. The Times now running with MAN RAISED MONEY FOR CHARITY as its smear, while very little about Farage's mystery 5 mil from a non dom crypto nonce.

Is Kemi Badenoch okay?

Considering the average age of a Tory voter is about 75 I’m really not surprised about the use of AI slop

I'm a bit surprised Kemi hasn't bothered to suggest anything interesting at conference. abolishing inheritance tax? cutting spending to pay for tax cuts for the very well off? radical...

inheritance tax impacts a maximum of 5% of the population. does she think any of that will get younger voters on side? or anyone up north?

she has done well to steady what was a sinking ship but she's only playing to the gallery. no new ideas. nothing to suggest she's savvy enough for the fight if there really is an early election coming (thank god!).

Inheritance tax does not effect 5% of the population: there are swathes of middle class and even working class boomers who are leaving property to my generation.

It’s a very bold move that will interest a lot of people. Unfortunately it’s a typical Tory stunt - offer huge financial breaks to families with no real plan on how to pay for it, leading to broken promises and a spiralling budget once in government.

From gov.uk

in the tax year 2023 to 2024, 4.72% of UK deaths resulted in an Inheritance Tax (IHT) charge, increasing by 0.10 percentage points since the tax year 2022 to 2023. This means that IHT is payable on fewer than 1 in 20 estates, as it has been since 2007 to 2008, and broadly since statistics were first produced. This proportion is now the highest it has been since 2006 to 2007, where it was 5.96%

Jark isn't far off!

Like so much of right wing economic policy, it benefits very few people, but people think it will benefit them one day

Presumably it's a lot higher in London, but then that will also mean it's considerably lower elsewhere.

It's a policy designed to frighten to people who will likely never be affected by it. Now where have we seen THAT before?

Sorry I was thinking more around generational wealth as opposed to the the figure that exists now, which I appreciate is not as locked. The government have supposedly locked the cap until 2031 but between now and then the number of people who will have estates going beyond that cap will continue to rise (the caveat being that house prices continue to skyrocket, although that seems to have suddenly stalled this year, so who knows what impact that will actually have)

It feels like one of those stories that taps into a false economy - IHT has become an albatross because people consider it a tax on top of a tax, and are heavily against it, regardless of how much it might actually impact them. Hence the stunt aspect.

From next April, the value of your private pensions will be brought into the IHT regime. As every employed person over the age of 21 is automatically enrolled into a pension unless they opt out, this will bring a considerly higher amount of people into the bracket that IHT will be paid on. Combined with inflation, and frozen IHT tax thresholds, that 5% figure is going to rise dramatically over the next decade, so there is more to this proposal than initially may meet the eye, and it probably would bring a lot of people back to voting for them. I 100% agree however that there is no plan on how to pay for the loss of tax take, and would only add to spiralling budget deficits should it happen.
