Every time this comes on the radio, I’m sat watching a TV with four channels and no remote control

Come on moopy, make me feel OLD!

These were big hits at the Sunday night family party with all the cousins running around FERAL

I have very vague snatched music memories before this, but this is a very specific one.

I remember being very BAMBOOZLED by this

I assume these were all just from TOTP because I can’t think of anywhere else that showed music videos. I can’t really imagine Kate on the Des O’Connor show, but WHO KNOWS

Talk about a time capsule. You don’t really here this anymore so when it comes on it’s instant transportation to a VERY different time

What a TUNE though

At about four or five, I knew about Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.

I didn't really pay attention to music after that until Kylie. TOTP was often on, so I do vaguely recall Michael Jackson, probably Bad era. I recall being scared of various weird 80s music videos. I possibly watched bits of Live Aid but that might be a false memory.

And then this happened and changed everything

Wombles. I’d actually argue that Superwomble is an amazing album that is so much better than it has any need to be.

First single I bought myself was a wee bit of a classic which is why I mention the Wombles because i’m being honest here and in retrospect I am Quite Pleased With Myself. Video Killed The Radio Star by the Buggles. My then older brother hated it which made it all the more sweet.

He can fly (he can fly) he can swim (he can swim) he’s a hero (hero). HES GOT X-RAY SIGHT!

And as I posted a few weeks ago

I don't know why my mind went to this but this tune and video are burned into my core. It came on every afternoon on a Jordanian TV channel and my older sister just had to blast it every time.

Madonna - Holiday
The Pointer Sisters - Jump
Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine - Rhythm is Gonna Get You
Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas?
Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky
Sinitta - Toy Boy

A few things jostle for position - Musical Youth's Pass The Dutchie, Toyah's It's A Mystery, Madness with Baggy Trousers...I styruggle to remember what was first but I do remember my parents having the "Super Trouper" album on vinyl too - I think that's all around 1980/81.

Oh and Kings Of The Wild Frontier by Adam And The Ants. Whenever they did the twin drummers thing first. Might have been Dog Eat Dog. Wasn't Ant Music, I knew them by then...

Omg yes to all of them. My auntie was a huge Toyah fan. She was the youngest and still living at home when I would stay at my nans house, and she would play these pop-punk records. I was most confused because they sounded nothing like what my parents were listening to

I don’t remember Adam Ant’s music, but I do remember him. In hindsight, he was a superstar for about 5 minutes. Billy Idol also, but he was huge for much longer.

This is a huge memory, unfortunately

Britain in the early 80s had a very random teddy boy revival. There were loads of compilations of “rock n roll classics” but it wasn’t Elvis and the Everly Brothers, it was a load of knock-off pap. Weird to think but it was actually only about 25 years later… a bit like a Neptunes/Timbaland revival happening today.

It’s hard to be exact about when I first remember something from growing up in an era where music was prevalent on TV and the radio was pretty much always on in every household during the day. I’m sure I got familiar with lots of stuff after the fact but I think my first clear memory is seeing Siouxise & The Banshees performing ‘Swimming Horses’ I remember her unsettling and possibly scaring very young me a little but I came to love that band and that song a few years later.

First group I got into where I actively started buying their singles etc with my pocket money was Five Star halfway through the ‘Luxury Of Life’ campaign.

I don't think Billy Idol was ever as big as Adam Ant was in the UK. By quite some margin.

Five Star were one of the first acts I got into as a young fan, but not exactly earliest memories, I was about 8 or 9 by that point.

Oh, I remember This Ol' House!

I was thinking this - how just how much music appeared on light entertainment shows, and how many of them there were across the week on only three channels. Well, two really, as I don't think BBC2 was home to them.

Yes I do vaguely remember Adam Ant being the biggest thing in pop but it didn’t seem to last very long, whereas Billy Idol went on to have a successful career. Maybe moreseo in the US I’m not sure.

A bit like Frankie GTH. Absolutely enormous for a minute.

Back when you could leave your door unlocked and when you got home, all your stuff was still there because nothing was worth stealing.

Just had a little look on Wiki - Shakin’ Stevens was the UKs biggest singles act of the 80s :o :D

In the era of the megastar, that’s quite an achievement.

14 top ten hits.

I didn’t know this but he’d been going since 1970 - his big break came over a decade later.

I was very familiar with Shakin Stevens at the height of his fame as my sister was very into him when she was young, although she soon moved on.

The thing I didn't fully appreciate until rewatching old TOTPs though was just how long throughout the 80s he was having hits for.

I read quite recently that "Merry Christmas Everyone" was recorded to be released in 1984 but he was on the same label as Wham! and was advised to leave it until the following year. So he did and got a #1.

I also remember buying his Greatest Hits on cassette for her for Christmas in HMV here, at the same time as picking up Like A Virgin for myself.

The Merry Christmas Everyone single was the first Xmas present I ever bought anyone - for my cousin. The power of Christmas when you consider the longevity of that song when the rest of his huge catalogue is barely heard of these days.
