Facebook is hideous. Zuck was very smart (ew) to buy Instagram. if it had just been Facebook he'd have faded to obscurity by now - he literally had one good idea 20+ years ago.

Threads just seems to be full of people making infuriatingly vague statements for clicks.

“Wow, Lady Gaga really showed her true colours today”

“What’s going on in Uzbekistan today is utterly crazy”.

I tired of it very quickly.

The people who use it that way certainly ARE from a different era.

I certainly couldn't endure a family WhatsApp group though.

Facebook is useful for events. Gigs, club nights etc. It seems like the closest to a centralised thing for that sort of stuff.

I'm a TikTok girlie.

I'm surprised by how many people in this thread are saying they don't fuck with it. It is the culture.

I don't love shortform video content. Some of us just like to read etc etc.

That said, I do find the algorithm is better at honing in on what you want to see than the other apps... I don't know if that's strictly a good thing mind.

Is TikTok's algorithm that much more potent than Instagram's? Because that's the only discernible 'advantage' I seem to read about it.

TikTok is brain numbing. It’s like insta stories on speed. I have to drag myself off insta to get away from the doom scrolling, so I have zero interest adding TikTok to that problem

Threads is actually good fun. Yeah it has a bot problem but nowhere near as bad as the others, and the “left” voice is more dominant. And it has the humour of Twitter (people just slating stupid questions and comments) without the nastiness of Twitter.

Anecdotally, I would say so. It's way better at serving you what you want. Instagram literally serves me gay men, Mariah Carey memes and astrology. It has no idea what else I might be interested in.

It's literally new media and has absolutely every sort of content, for any age or interest
When I downloaded it, I was affronted with a load of right-wing shite. I honestly couldn't be arsed to build another algorithm from scratch.

Besides, the same short-form video format is everywhere. I don't feel I'm missing out, and the best creators are multi-platform anyway. I watch YouTube like TV these days.

Personally, I think it's good to have something that separates me as an adult from the kids. Have TikTok, by all means, but I'll happily live a life of ignorance when it comes to that particular platform.

I can't stand Instagram. Facebook is still relatively useful for some stuff, but mostly it is dirge. In some ways it doesn't feel like Facebook's fault, people just got bored of saying stuff about their day.

I do use TikTok. There's an infinite world of content, and you will find something that interests you. And at the moment it feels like the least enshittified of all them.

Possibly, but I feel like anything good about it, has just been drowned by an algorithmic flood of paid content, which essentially drowns out personal posting. For a while you could get genuine interactions and reward for posting. Now you're lucky if you get a handful of likes, so why bother posting?

No disagreement, it is fully enshittified.

I couldn't even tell if people saying more would help or not. Because they aren't.

Me out here single-handedly keeping Facebook going then!

And TikTok can absolutely fuck right off.
I will take no TikTok slander from somebody still using Facebook! :basil:

I use TikTok loads but for me its barely a social media platform because I don't use it to connect with friends... its basically YouTube for shortform videos. I think people are too quick to dismiss it offhand as a platform for teenagers or after only using it for a short while. You really need to use it for a little while for it to be any good - the algorithm is potently good (/bad) once it gets to know you.

Instagram is the only one of these that I actually use to connect with friends anymore - so if I had to pick one as 'social media' then it would have to be that!

Anyway my (50yo) friend loves it and his algorithm is all bars and restaurants so I just let him find out about all the cool new places and tell the rest of us. :basil:

Facebook is genuinely also the least useable interface of anything ever. about 5 years ago when I still used to use it for housing groups I was regularly STUMPED by how to use it. and I was young then!! search is shit, you can't sort posts chronologically, or it gives you the option to but still serves you any old shit in any order. not to mention the fact that all groups I've ever used have been FULL of spam. it's a shit shit product.
