I think that because of many different hints plus so many other fans thought so before (that she's a lesbian)

Somewhat asexual too, but into women in that regard (can be romantic for men or any gender too).

Different hints include how Enya cut her hair and kept it short since (not necessarily meaning she likes women, but when paired with those plaid/checkered outfits and especially the overalls/dungarees and bandana/neckerchief (1981-82 look) that is an intentional lesbian style). :laugh:

I interpret that as being a question like "if every man shares compliments and stays faithful to women, does that necessarily make my life much better?" (something called compulsory heterosexuality or comphet)

And since then it's mostly seen in affectionate moments (e.g. 2008 Today interview where she sings, and that 2019 Mary From Dungloe clip). Haha also Graham Norton joked about Enya being 'at the back of a Subaru' (sterotyped car for lesbians in the 90s).

Vague references in the songs: Sumiregusa (Wild Violet) violet flowers are symbol of lesbian/sapphic love; China Roses mentions Sappho Comet (a hummingbird, but it has the name red-tailed comet too. Roma must've chose it as Sappho is the Greek poet who lived on the island of Lesbos, where the terms 'sapphic' and 'lesbian' originate from).

She always feared that men would try to compromise her freedom and independence. I remember her sharp comments on Irish women and their lack of understanding when it comes to emancipation.

Given her stubborn and uncompromising character, I think only another woman could ever truly get her—so that's very likely.
The only woman suitable for this role is probably Roma

I don't know if she had any other close (girl) friends besides Roma.

Roma seems to be the best at understanding Eithne, and got her to open up emotionally through music

I think she must've had/still had other close female friends, just kept them private/away from the public eye. I wouldn't be surprised if her and Princess Diana were close. ♡
