Special is not even that bad :D just not NECESSARY. if you chop Every Time, Tonight's the Night, Anything and Special you have the perfect record.

Can't Be Stopped would've been the ideal real closer.

8.8/10 - but I think front to back it's actually a better record than janet. slightly fewer CAREER HIGHS but way more consistent and some of the production is really a THRILL to swim in.

"Can't Be Stopped" is more fab than I remember, they should have deleted "Special" and replaced it with that

It's tricky. I think janet. is probably more consistent with more career highs but The Velvet Rope is undoubtedly her artistic peak as far as I'm concerned.

Traditionally it has always been my favourite Janet album but I think janet. is making real threats now to replace it.

Thanks again for a wonderful syncette evening everyone and thanks especially to @Jark for organising and hosting.

Quite a nice finale sounding ending, quite apt for the long JOURNEY this album has been.

I'm still not stanning, but I did enjoy it tonight. :)
I mean, what MORE does miss jackson have to do to persuade a german table to stan?

Thanks @Jark ! Are we doing Control/RN1814 next or saving that for after All For You...

don't make me think of the next one already :D I'm exhausted!

(All For You/Unbreakable a week on Tuesday, be there! :disco:)

If only OUR SHIRL was here to see the anti-Janet club reduced to one.

OK obviously TTWLG is the 11 because it’s one of my favourite songs of all time... leaning heavily on the UK Soul II Soul sound, it pretty much birthed America’s love affair with 90s groove. But This Time is a very close ten and three quarters

11 That's the Way Love Goes
08 You Want This
09 If
10 This Time
09 Throb
08 What'll I Do
07 Funky Big Band
07 New Agenda
08 Because of Love
09 Again
10 Where Are You Now
06 The Body That Loves You
07 Any Time, Any Place

my only issue with the album is the wedged-in What’ll I Do - it seems like every album Janet likes to throw in a 60s psychedelic pop, Motown or rock n roll inspired song, and it ruins the flow. It’s a great song just on the wrong album. It should have been a bonus track at the end. And I’d love a version without the interludes. Talk about overkill. Other than that it’s like a greatest hits album.

Every long running pop artist has their “arthouse” album, still very pop but with the confessional lyrics and experimental sounds. It could have gone very wrong. But it’s a great album.

06 I Get Lonely
07 Rope Burn

05 Special
08 Can't Be Stopped

long and bloated but as a whole it’s an experience and while it’s not an easy pop album to just put on and enjoy, it’s objectively very interesting and provocative.

best enjoyed via The Velvet Rope Tour where many of these songs are really brought to life. The album benefits from its theatrics.

That's nice and Imma letchufinish but your write-up was unfortunately nullified by these two scores.

Ha. Twas never a singles album for me. They're just nice but safe commercial tunes. So much better on offer on the album. I don't like her voice on I Get Lonely.

currently enjoying my first dip back into the sunny waters of All For You in some time in prep for the next janette party :disco:
