Christine and the Queens - album #3

I actively dislike je te vois enfin, which must be a first for a Christine song. so boring and monotone.
 
I didn’t like the return single either

The new album is entirely in French, non?

I'd assumed Redcar was his new stagename and the "presents..." was just for now.

I wonder how many other North Yorkshire towns he considered before settling on Redcar? I'd have gone for Chester-le-Street personally.
 
I still cannot understand whether Chris is using he and the name Redcar for this project (which seems to he conceptual?) or whether it's an actual full-on rebrand.

anyway, the single is doing nothing at all for me but I listened to Girlfriend and various other god tier songs from the two albums yesterday and was reminded of why I STAN!
 
I haven't given the new songs that much attention but the performances on Joel's Holland last night grabbed me more:



There was another performance that was even better but it doesn't seem to have been uploaded.

these ones are good. lots of interesting vocal experimentation. I've only listened to about four songs but I already feel he's gone to some very strange places and maybe this album will take some work...

 
I've not really liked anything so far. The production is nice but she forgot to bring the catchy melodies.
 
I was a bit tired when I put this on last night but by the end it really wasn't holding my attention. This interview is very telling regarding the recording circumstances, some of his personal issues and record company battles.

I consider myself a reasonably big fan of Chris, but mon deur this new album is absolutely terrible :D A career killer potentially.
The song a couple of tracks in where he just goes LA LA LA LA for about 10 minutes??

I'm honestly shocked the label allowed it to be released, or that it's been released under the Christine And The Queens name. It feels like it should have been popped out under the RedCar persona and quickly forgotten (a bit like Miley Cyrus' Dead Petz was).

The thing is, even if he never has a hit again or sells many albums, Chris will always be a live draw and is at the point in his career where he should really be headlining smaller festivals - a similar sort of place to somebody like Florence ATM. This album really feels like an act of self SABOTAGE. There was a Guardian interview recently too that seemed to almost confirm exactly that.

I think he's had such a shit time of it that this album has come from some cathartic place and just needed to happen. I wouldn't be surprised if the next album (the one made with Mike Dean) is much popper again. the release being so low key probably means it doesn't have the power to kill his career. it'll just pass most people by.

also I don't think he's really worried about his career trajectory right now, he's clearly just working through and navigating pain and loss.

So this "prologue" is an individual catharsis then. I wonder why he didn't call it a mixtape then...that seems to be a standard for things that a bit more unusual, fragmented. His decision, of course but it does feel as if he's been right through the wringer and his label are being absolute dicks.
 
I tried the album once and can't imagine the circumstances in which I'll think 'do you know what, I think I'll give that Redcar album another go'. I am here however for artists doing what they need to do to move forward, and I think he has something to say and a compelling voice. So although I'm happy to read about the album and the process, I think I'll steer clear of this prologue now and await the main body of work.

This is quite a difficult read. Poor guy is really going through it.

I've not listened to the album yet, but 'le chevalier' didn't really grab me :(
 
I'm keeping rien dire. And maybe a couple of others. Chris / Redcar has always been a bit hit-and-miss for me, so I never go in expecting to take away more than a couple of tracks. I'm still interested to see what the Mike Dean album will give us. Fingers crossed for the French Bangerz.
 
After slating this album I've decided that this song is rather fabulous. It's quirky and easy to dismiss but the vocal is so original and addictive.

 


He appears to be performing under the name Rahim C Redcar now

I thought he changed his name to Chris? And I had no idea the C&TQ name was dropped completely.

Maybe the Rahim name is just a DJ moniker.
 
This new one seems to be credited to both, on Spotify at least.
