Drag Race Down Under S01 E05 : Yeast Spread

I just can't with this series. Everything about it aside from Kita, Maxi and Anita is just awful.

And what's with the editing? It's like every scene has been randomly chopped. Nothing breathes properly. It just reeks of rush job.

On a positive note, Maxi whipping out a microphone for that Absolutely Everybody lip sync was EVERYTHING :disco:

I still can’t see Maxi as anything other than Matt Lucas in drag - especially now as ‘I’m a lady’ Florence for this episode.

‘absolutely everybody’ was a pure treat though

It’s just unpleasant at this point. The pains they took to send Scarlett to the safe zone first just so she doesn’t feel like she’s being punished for her racism.

Also the way they treated Etc was a bit mean, last week she didn’t deserve to be in the bottom and this week she wasn’t the worse but you could tell they wanted her gone.

Etc was just doing a touch to much for me in that lip sync, whereas Maxi really embodied the joy of the song.

That said, while I was glad Maxi stayed out of the bottom 2, I did think the way they handled Etc overall this episode was SO WEIRD.

"Etcetera, your mature and thoughtful approach to complex issues is so impressive. You are the future this community needs. SASHAY AWAY"

"So Scarlet, turns out you'r a racist, huh? CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE SAFE"

Honestly I’m only watching cause I enjoy the IMHO recaps.

Anyone doing blackface should be cancelled immediately, no excuses.

When I taught in Italy a lot of kids came in on History Day dressed in black face (MLK came up a lot). Is it just a lot less socially unacceptable in southern Europe?

It is now that she did it, cancel her!

Oh god. That’s just reminded me of the fully sighted white woman who went on Greek ‘Stars in their eyes’ as Stevie Wonder!

I really like Maxi and the microphone was fun but I'm lost as to why I should have enjoyed her lip sync otherwise. She just wandered around the stage waving her dress occasionally...

For me, not every song requires a bunch of frantic pointing and acrobatics. Maxi was serving pure 'Darienne had this song on cassette tape when it came out' and as a queen who purchased Vanessa Amorosi's The Power album from my local CD store back in 2000, it was just pure joy.

Etc was fine but it was all a bit Kenya Michaels.

I don't think I've ever seen a more negative reaction online to a Drag Race episode than I have this one, Instagram and Reddit are flooded with comments saying the series should be cancelled :eyes:

A bizarre decision not to just eliminate Scarlet either Willam style or via lip sync, and a bizarre way for RuPaul to handle the situation. Yet they seem to be determined to remove ANY QUEEN that shows any signs of bring interesting from this show. Agreed also that the whole season just feels RUSHED!

Elektra remains my only reason to keep watching, I honestly find her a JOY and completely hilarious to watch despite the ropey drag. We've really been spoilt with her, Tayce and Bimini.

Baffled why Art hasn't just played to her strengths this whole time. She clearly could have delivered a properly KILLER Kath OR Kim in Snatch Game but instead seems determined to try and play outside her safe zone, even if she's not very good at it :D She was genuinely quite funny in the reading challenge.

It feels like the judges have entirely forgotten that Kita Mine is even THERE! :D

I cannot stop watching it. My favourite lip sync in YEARS. I genuinely feel sorry for anybody who couldn't tap into the sheer JOY Maxi Shields was exhibiting.

I'm sorry but if you think that's all she was doing you weren't watching closely enough. Or maybe you just don't like the song.

Etcetera's generic flailing absolutely did not compare.

(I mean I was half joking)

I don’t think Etc was that good but Maxi simply held a mic and gave us nothing.

Also that song is a bop and deserved better.

Fist Fun Karen has a strong brand and absolutely nothing else. Her best line was the unaired one given to her by the snobby infomercial lady (I actually loved every one of her pretend to be above all this lines and could have watched it all episode, not to mention Michelle doing whatever the "drag queen in a woman's body" version of mansplaining is).

The lip sync didn't give moi loife, but Maxi connected to the song and was clearly having a moment inside the song. Etc was in full Glee mode. I was expecting to see more of those promised "old school tricks" though, and the clear victory almost came as much from Etc's lack of a connection to the song as it was from Maxi having a lovely flashback to her early 30s.

Haven't kept up with moopy on this so don't know the general reaction.

Properly loved the first episode, thought the second was decent, but then... well.

The return of Art Simone last week pissed me off so much I'm not sure I can bother any more. Not watched this episode yet and don't feel any real desire to.

Rhys Nicholson has a live show on Netflix and I quite enjoyed it.

Just caught up with the last three episodes. That Absolutely Everybody lip-sync was incredible- and the sheer joy Maxi stabbed it with deserved every plaudit.

Gutted Anita is gone though.
