I wonder if they're lining up a sex addiction story for Max. He's hit on Marie, slept with Cindy, tried to kiss Linda and 'knows' Zoe. Plus, he has form.

I wonder if you're giving EE too much credit there. I just think they're a bit creatively redundant, and still lean on Max bonking inappropriate women for SHOCKING NOVEL NEVER-SEEN-BEFORE storyline twists.
Most people called Max / Cindy the very second Jake Wood's return was announced. I can easily imagine Nicola at some point in the coming year.

The more I think about all of those red herrings with Jasmine possibly being out for Cindy, the more it annoys me. All that crap about her hiding her National Insurance and online footprint etc. As she wasn’t one of the Fords then there was no way Cindy or Elaine could have connected her to anything, so why avoid giving those details?

Forget all the Zoe/Jasmine stuff, Max has been the absolute highlight of Christmas for me, especially the scenes at the Beales on Christmas day (also loved Kathy's drunken expressions when she let the cat out the bag about Stacey) Oscar holding him back and then him taking a swig of the brandy as he walked out And then tonight when he was smoking and holding the cars up and giggled with Oscar afterwards The talk with Linda at the end was also brilliantly acted by him and felt rather poignant. Jake is a great actor! I'm glad he's back

Other highlights include Kat's SCREAM on the boxing day ep and also her talk with Sam about her cancer. There is a few other things but I can't think right now

Eastenders is one giant REDUX at the moment.
The Chrissie / Sam / Zoe reunion was obviously very intentional. But the rest of it feels like a show that's unable to evolve.
- Max having inappropriate relations that are then exposed at inappropriate events? CHECK
- Max alienating everyone and being disowned by his family? CHECK
- A previously good-natured man flipping out, attacking his love interest, and being killed in the Vic at Christmas? Replace Keanu with Anthony, and Sharon with Zoe CHECK
- Long lost daughter revelations at Christmas? CHECK. At least they didn't run Jasmine over.
The Nigel plot was the best bit of Christmas, and even that was largely reliant on nostalgia for the 90s.
EE feels very much like latter-day Neighbours, which in its dying years also reverted to nostalgia-chasing. The show has stopped looking forward, accepted it won't ever gain new viewers and can only hope to regain some lost ones, and so is now exclusively playing for old timers. Which of course is very understandable, but Neighbours should be a warning that it's not a tactic for long-term survival.
