Lissie - Carving Canyons

There's been a bit of discussion in the new music and release schedule threads but can't find a recent thread, so here goes.

I've had a listen to the album and it's actually pretty good. As I said elsewhere she was diminishing returns for me after the wonderful debut, but I think Miley and a few other artists have made Americana somewhat trendy again and I'm here for more Lissie now.

The album is quite downtempo but the best tracks are the uptempo "Night Moves" and this one, the best on the album for me:

I love this! The singles are all very good, and the closing track Midnight is wonderful (lovely horns!), but I think it is a greater than the sum of its parts kind of album.

A couple of songs go a bit deeper into a country direction (as suggested by the titles, Yellow Roses and Lonesome Wine).

I read an interview with her in which she talked about it being a Covid break up and moving on album - spent with her dog, rewilding her farm, growing flowers and listening to Joe Jackson, ABBA and Boney M repeatedly.

AH: You mentioned influences. When I was listening to “Night Moves,” one of the singles – that could be a long lost Fleetwood Mac song, between the feel of it and your vocals in it. Stevie Nicks, I’d imagine, is a huge influence for you?

L: You know, not consciously. Of course, like pretty much every person, I adore her, and I think she’s just amazing, and I love her style and her voice. I’ve loved Fleetwood Mac over the years. They were never my main band I listened to, but I definitely LOVE Fleetwood Mac, and I LOVE Stevie Nicks. So I think maybe, on some subconscious level, that has happened. I’d almost say more to my producer and my musicians’ influence over recognizing that my voice can do those things, so they sort of nudge me in that direction. But I don;t know that it’s ever been intentional on my part to be like, ‘I have to be like Fleetwood Mac!’ I think it’s just sort of been this subconscious nudge that’s happened over the years, because of comparisons. And just the spirit of my music has lent itself to that kind of driving rock guitar and intense, smooth, sultry feeling that the songs and the voice have lent themselves to. But anytime I get that comparison, I’m just, ‘I’m not worthy.’ I’m honored. That’s really, really huge – I’m very grateful. This album, too – it’s funny, it also really doesn’t have a genre. “Night Moves” was the most obvious radio-ish song, so that’s the one you push. But, of course there’s 10, 11 other songs on the album that are kind of all existing in their own kind of world, hopefully.

Night Moves really is great. Thinking of it as a lost song from either Rumours or Tango only makes it better.

very pleasantly surprised by this album, I spin it a few times a day. I was afraid it wouldn't deliver tunes like Catching A Tiger (the only other Lissie album I've heard) but it's both that and matured

and the Stevie Nicks energy on Night Moves is of course everything

Listening now. It's a bit like the rest of her stuff, (very!) nice but unremarkable.

She sounds a lot like Miley Cyrus! I never noticed that before

This album is extremely solid in the same way that My Wild West was but solidifies my growing-for-years impression that Castles is somehow uniquely inspired and the true competitor to Catching A Tiger in her catalogue.

Giving this a second listen and it really is great. Better than her debut for me. I know I said this already but I'm absolutely not over how her voice is a complete doppelgangers of Miley's. I can see Milez doing this sort of thing in a few years and we love to see it.

Lissie's is a little smoother but I do see it.

Lissie grows her own flowers, Miley buys 'em.

I think they’re both just heavily influenced by Stevie Nicks so there’s a common thread, but yes the tone is similar.
