Siouxsie & The Banshees

Sad news about the band's first studio drummer Kenny Morris dying yesterday.

Today is the anniversary of The Rapture (16 January 1995).

08 O Baby
10 Tearing Apart
09 Stargazer
09 Fall from Grace
08 Not Forgotten
04 Sick Child
06 The Lonely One
07 Falling Down
10 Forever
07 The Rapture
08 The Double Life
10 Love Out Me

The searing, soaring peaks we've came to expect are here, some lurking stubbornly in the shadows only to draw you in, others engulf and glamour you in a luxury of ennui, agitation and skin-shedding rage. Sick Child is a noticeably unsuccessful showcase of Budgie's songwriting and the French flair of The Lonely One can't save it from keeping it company in the filler stakes. Unfortunately, the rewards are less accessible than Superstition or have nothing to pounce on you a la Peek-A-Boo. Production is divided between a pristine polish courtesy of John Cale (the gallant Tearing Apart in particular boasts one of Siouxsie's most beautiful, gliding middle 8s) that arguably doesn't provoke much out of the band, and the Banshees themselves wherein they sound captivatingly exhausted and indeed falling apart (they would split the following year). The album simply didn't compete or mutate their sound as had been happening in the period of Peepshow, The Creatures' Boomerang and Superstion (with their last haunting outing being the dark fantasy of Face to Face with Danny Elfman), and yet it's stubborn doubling down on their own terms is exactly what has meant the stature of The Rapture has only grown for me.

I'm loathe to just copy and paste social posts without comment, but I found this interesting given how important they both were to the sound of the band. I've also not yet listened to the John McKay album released last year (sessions recorded throughout the 80s), which features Morris on 3 tracks.

Edit: not sure it's showing, but it's Budgie paying tribute to Kenny Morris.

Someone posted these on the Facebook group. Thought it was interesting to see what with Betty Boo doin' the do too.

This also made me chuckle before typing in "Siouxsie":
