Is this franchise basically dead? The new Academy series is being absolutely mauled left right and centre. I have no interest in watching it but I'm curious...what went wrong?

PS I enjoyed season 3 of Picard.

Thank heavens I never actually watched Discovery. I've seen a couple of clips here and there and the cringe level is severe.

This is what I didn't like about Enterprise of the original batch of series

It also seems that practically EVERYTHING since that has been either a prequel or a reboot

I’m sorry, I haven’t watched the video (yet). I read this thread in bed at half 11 last night and it wasn’t the right time to be watching a YouTube video.

This Academy thing is putting me to sleep. Holly Hunter is miscast.

I'm no apologist but:

- everything being prequel is just current trend. GoT, LotR, Hunger Games etc etc. And I don't mind for Star Trek, there's a lot of unexplored stuff. Yes, sequel would be great too at some point.
- Yes, some dialogue is shit. The one in the video is the worst of the worst from S1, but they do rely on snappy one-liners a bit too much.
- None of any of new Star Trek is a patch on TNG, Voy or DS9

BUT, for what it is, SNW has stayed true to original Trek values. Self contained episodes, some monster of the week, some slightly ridiculous premises, some social issues, a bit of captaincy bending rules, individual character development and arcs (and no, I don't like all the characters, but i didn't in TNG or others either)

So yeah, SNW is fine. Don't hate. Look forward to being able to see S2 whenever it is available to me.

DISCO is shit though.

I have no interest in watching any series set in the 32nd century or whenever SA is meant to be set, particularly when they behave like and use the language of Gen Z. This is NOT Star Trek.

I get that, the friend I watched it with felt the same as you. I'm not especially precious about all that though and found it pretty entertaining. Not a patch on the 90s era, or anywhere close, but I'll stick with it.
