Amorosi. Williams. Carlton. Paradis. Hudgens. Mae. Redgrave. Feltz. The forename Vanessa is not a name synonymous with sustained chart success.

Yet still they try.

A huge hit in Australia as the millennium approached, the party anthem was released in the UK during the Sydney Olympics, a very wise move as it was played constantly during multiple events, and there was a performance by the lady herself at the closing ceremony, although she was upstaged by a certain Miss Kylie Ann Minogue, thousands of ballroom dancers, and the most amazing motorised stilettos.




Even if this Vanessa is never heard of again, her legacy is set in stone.

I think the Vanessa thread last week was for a new album, but this was at VoR's special request.

Loved the intro :D

This and a few of the songs from Hazardous are essential. Her voice is incredible, second only to Joan Osborne for its earthiness. Apart from This Is Who I Am, with its video like the opening credits to Kathy Griffin: Life On The D-List, she got the singles completely wrong on the last campaign.
 
How CRUEL that this thread was started while I was unable to access Moopy :(

I ADORE this song. I remember buying her 'The Power' album from my local independent record store ('cause she was too indie to be stocked in Woolworths) and looning over it for a while. In retrospect it wasn't actually very good, but I liked it a lot at the time. I remember thinking 'Steam' could be a big hit if only a proper star like Martine McCutcheon would record it. :D

She has one hell of a voice. Her lung-busting performance of 'Heroes Live Forever' at the Olympics was a proper :o moment for a 14 year old gay too naive to twig that she was clearly miming.

It's interesting how up and down her career has been in Australia. Her first album was proper huge, then her second absolutely bombed and she dropped off the face of the earth for ages. Then she had a massive comeback with Perfect and This Is Who I Am and finally seemed to be on the right track (if relegated to strictly a local star), but then her last album didn't even get released.

I think, with a couple of exceptions, she's struggled to really get material that's worthy of her voice. I do think Perfect could have been MUCH bigger worldwide if pushed.

I think the singles just bombed. It is very odd. She's never been able to build up much momentum. Bad management and uneven material.

Anyways, this is a total 13/10 moment for me. The scream she does at 3:24 is a MOMENT OF LIFE. :disco:

I’m in an Australian cafe and they’ve been playing Missy Higgins and now this gem. It’s really great.
 
Y’know I really do enjoy Vanessa but I would never go out my way to play Absolutely Everybody
 
All I know are this and the rather decent Hazardous album. I wonder what else this Sheila has in her catalogue.
 
The other major hit from her first album is a nostalgic fave




Love that she originally wrote the chorus as “everyone you know is gonna DIE”

She really did suffer from a lack of direction, no discernible identity and poor material, as VoR pointed out above

With a few obvious exceptions her career has mostly been a very strong voice singing boring crap
 
Looking like a young Nicki French probably didn't help either. And I'm looking forward to checking out her albums later though.
 
Poor Vanessa seems to have rather been through it in recent years, including a protracted legal battle with her own mother.

 
I’m more surprised she managed to make $10 million odd from her music. She’s not exactly been a huge force, so good on her!
