Wednesday Wednesday Wednesday Wednesday come on, come on

The umbrella and the mirror are the same for me, ladders too. Knives and shoes work differently.
I can't hand a knife to someone with the cutting half pointing his way, that part must always be on my palm so that he touches the safe part.
Likewise am not meant to leave scissors open. Or put shoes down on their sides.

My mother was (well still is, but I don't have to live under the same roof as it any more) a nightmare of superstitions.

The three which still trigger me

Putting an umbrella up indoors

Crossed knives (for example cutlery where one knife is placed across another - and she'd insist that everyone in the house had to witness it before they could be uncrossed)

Putting new shoes on a table

Washing clothes on New Year’s Day was the worst in my house.

YES MUM, BUT I PISSED MYSELF DRUNK LAST NIGHT AND NOW I’LL HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR TO WORK ON TUESDAY

I also salute Magpies when I see them.

My mum has this thing on New Year's Eve that the person with the darkest hair has to leave the house immediately after midnight had struck and then come straight back in again. I don't know anybody else that has ever heard of it, it's not technically first-footing I think because she insists it has to be the darkest-haired person.

Not that I'd be surprised to learn that it is just first-footing and she got mixed up with the dark hair thing of another superstition.

Actually it does seem to come from somewhere.

The origins of first-footing is uncertain, although there may be a connection to the Viking Invasion of the British Isles: "This may go back to the time of Vikings when the arrival of a blond stranger at your door would be the cause of fear and alarm."

Oh wow! Thanks for that. I'll have to tell the rest of the family that she's not actually batshit and it is a real thing because we all take the piss out of her for it :D

I'm just glad that, as the only blonde-haired member of the family, I never had to go out in the freezing cold and perform this ridiculousness.
