Haha, that sounds like an absolute blast! The accordion adds such a unique touch to any song, especially when it's unexpected. I'd love to know the name of the song – it sounds like a perfect soundtrack for a good laugh and some nostalgia. Accordion power!

Radio 2 have been playing this new Paul Heaton one quite a lot. It's an ear-worm and I absolutely hate it, but it feels like classic Beautiful South.

Jacqui Heaton's stepped away due to health and personal reasons, so he's replaced her with a 26 year old

Why did they stop performing as The Beautiful South, when essentially Paul and Jacqui WERE the Beautiful South (at least as far as being recognised by the general public)

Some of the others went on to perform and record as The South didn't they, before the time Heaton and Abbott started to work together again. Perhaps it was in deference to them.

Anyway, I much preferred Briana Corrigan's voice to Jacqui Abbott's, and my track of choice has always been You Keep It All In. And there were times when I found Dave Hemingway more arousing than I should have.

They always did tread a fine line where superficially the music could be seen as almost whimsical and parochial, but with a very pleasing underbite of snark and satire lyrically. When those lyrics are dealing with contemporary culture, there are always going to be some that seem questionable in retrospect. But they hit the target far more often than they missed.

I did particularly dislike 'Rotterdam' after commercial radio here made it into a jingle substituting Rotterdam for 'Totterdown', an area of Bristol, together with other local lyrical swaps, performed in a comedy broad accent. That they used for years and years. No thanks.

I always enjoyed Jacqui's few TV appearances. You'd assume from record and video that she was a silky smooth pretty little thing, and instead she'd talk like BERTHA who was 68, smoked 50 a day, and spent her days in Accrington Working Mens Club shrieking at her boyfriend Useless Mick to get another round of Fosters.

I didn't know that about The South. I also used to prefer Briana in the mid 90s but came round to Jacquie, especially after seeing her as part of the band live, and struggle to think of the band without her now. A great northern lass!

They did do a cover. It was for the film French Kiss.

Blue Is The Colour is their best & most consistent album, although all the first 6 have their good to great moments.

I just watched the music video, very mid-90s haha. ️

And speaking of playing through I've yet to do that for that for ASFM. I only know Henry VIII's piece is getting 8.

I have a lot of time for Paul Heaton, he's clearly a very talented pop writer, with millions of sales across multiple bands and several decades - but seems still to be quite normal. Sound wise I prefer the energy and slightly rougher pop excellence of The Housemartins. The Housemartins were a really big band at the time but I'd say they don't have much of a profile these days - like in the way 10cc were huge in the 1970s but now have next to no profile save for That One Song.
