Speaking of gaudy illustrations, I've always liked the cover for Courtney Love's greatest shame (after Steve Coogan), America's Sweetheart.

The sacred heart and the flower crown/crown of thorns

I think alternative acts have it much easier in my opinion.

Her first 4 album covers were brilliant. WTF was Venus was followed by a panic attack visual diarrhoea of 12 covers for Strange Little Girls. Scarlet was fantastique of course, but everything since that has been rubbish.
