Your least favourite album by an artist you love

God that 4th Eternal album :D i don’t remember anything about it now other than it was really terrible.

If you’re going to keep isolating and pushing out members of your band, you’d better have the tunes to keep the momentum going without them!

It was one of the most dramatic downturns, but it was also a period when the label treasure trove of a greatest hits album became a poisoned chalice for so many big UK acts of the 90s… Eternal, Texas, M People, Gabrielle, The Beautiful South… all had enormous compilation albums that sold gazillions, and all of them the bookend of their major success. None of them came back from it.
 
And in retrospect they pretty much were all bland and largely shite weren't they?
 
I can't say I love them but for some reason I have all their albums including some deluxe editions :eyes:

Annieways - it wasn't just that they forced themselves onto our iphones but the fact that it was such a crap album just added insult to injury....

I think Chemtrails is wonderful, it's a more consistent/complete album than the two that followed

Now it's no secret that "I Can Feel You" was a career-killing single.

But every so often someone will try to claim that the album was better than the single choice suggested, and they will say things like "Album track #5 was actually a BOP".

Such statements are incorrect.
 
Is that even Anastacia on the cover? I'm quite a big fan but can't remember much of that album. I think 'Heavy Rotation' was the only standout from 'Heavy Rotation' :what:

You're right there was very much that there was a pattern, and a GH was often a statement of intent to retire.

But also to be fair, in some of those cases there were much bigger factors at play than the death knell GH - Texas "join the carnival of love aaaahhhhhh", Heather Small wanting to go all out MOR, Eternal (EVIL) losing all means of contact with the outside world when fax machines became obsolete
 
Yeah it wasn't just the GH just that coincidental pattern, but whether or not the labels were bookmarking their demotion, they definitely all seemed to enter a phase of "what the fuck do we do next", which ties nicely into all your examples :D

Too many substandard MOR songs which were beneath her. Her 'Nashville not country' album, she may have been better going in a rootsier direction.
 
I think most of them did know what the fuck they wanted to do next

Sadly NOBODY ELSE wanted them to do that next :(
 
With The Beautiful South, they did have their 2 biggest selling albums after the Greatest Hits, both reached number 1 & included signature hits "Rotterdam", "Don't Marry Her", "Perfect 10", etc. Jacqui leaving the group was the catalyst for the British public to go OK DONE WITH YOU NOW.

Yes, The Beautiful South aren't an example at all - albums wise more successful after it than they were before.

Unless perhaps you consider the second GH - but then the commercial decline had already started by the time that was released.

Always annoying when someone who is obviously talented just chucks a whole bunch of stuff against the wall and says "ach, YOU deal with it". (it's still a 7/10 tho')

Apparently drawn entirely from the catalogue of some 70's folky/hippie band. If not even NWW could make them interesting, they must have been truly dire. A snooze.
 
Yeah I was referring to the 2nd Greatest Hits for Beautiful South. The first one was the biggie but I was more familiar with the second!
 
I remember writing a strongly worded e-mail to the record company with the subject line as "Not the Music I Like" (no reply) upon buying this diluted R&B shite after the magnificence of the Robyx produced debut album. I also still have PTSD from the time Ag passed off my entry for ASFMXMAS off as his own and won. Truly evil.

I think The Velvet Rope was the last good album Janet made. She's had some great songs since, but the albums have been a mess.

20 YO is crap but I enjoy Damita Jo and All for You. Obviously a step down from what came before them but so what. Discipline has Rock With U and 2nite, which are great but the rest is meh. I haven’t listened to Unbreakable in ages.
