Robotboy's Steps countdown has reminded me of their labelmate, failed pop star Ellie Campbell. Apparently she was a toilet cleaner before she got a record deal. She's probably back to it now.

To say she was a pound-shop Britney would be an insult to pound shops. In typical turn of the century record label optimism/insanity she got four whole singles and an album, despite the fact that it was obvious from the start that it was never going to happen.

Her only 'hit' So Many Ways was a bit meh, but I really quite like Don't Want You Back in a dated kinda way.



Her cover of Linda Rondstadt's You're No Good is quite fun too. Mostly for the video which she just spends flashing her tits on top of a van.


There was also Sweet Lies, which was just complete rubbish. I never bought the album, but I wish I had as it's predictably rare now.

The album's shit, but Don't Want You Back was great. I love the 2-step mix of it!

What the hell, throw in Sweet Lies too. Maybe it's improved since 1998.
 
I don't have it on MP3 and my CDs are boxed up. I think my flatmate might have it on MP3 though. I'll ask him!
 
OMG I have this album and it's amazing*

My favourite track is "Jackie" , a song about a friend advising another friend that this man ain't no good.

I will upload the entire opus later!

Don't Want You Back was a bit of a hit here, it seemed momentarily as though she might make it, then nothing. Australia used to like your down the dumper pop tarts - see also Tina Cousins & Madasun.
 
I got this album in a charity shop a few years back. It's rubbish, and you know me, I'm not all THAT fussy!
 
In a fit of drunken nostalgia I perhaps foolishly ordered this album on Amazon new & used last night. I'm quite excited at the prospect of owning it even if it is shit, I remember nearly buying it back in 2001 and opting not to, then regretting it periodically ever since.

Gosh but isn't Sweet Lies just the most boring launch single for any wannabe pop icon ever? OOZING STAR QUALITY ELLIE



I still love 'Don't Want You Back', mind...

That's probably more than the poor woman ever made from her pop career.
 
As if every post I've ever made on Moopy between the hours of midnight and 3am weren't evidence enough, I should NOT be allowed near the internet when I've been drinking.
 
Your reaction to her singles suggests it mightn't be a complete waste of money, but it really IS crap.

My only real consideration of the album was that it successfully managed to sound "dated" before that wave of pop had even had chance to get old.
 
The album was pretty rubbish. There are rip offs of Crazy, Stronger which sound pretty much the same with different lyrics.

Originally I think they were trying to copy Louise of all people, then came Britney.

I did really like So Many Ways though.

It is a completely terrible album. Poor VoR.
 
In the battle of Britney-Max Martin rips offs, Ellie never ever stood a chance. It was always Victoria Silvstedt for me.
 
'Don't Want You Back' was a great track, but that is the SLOWEST dance routine I have ever seen.
 
I bought this album and genuinely liked it at the time! :o

I still maintain that "Never Gonna Give Up On Love" is a LOST pop classic!
 
Don't Want You Back is a great song of the era but ripped off Baby One More Time and Rewind in a big way.

It really is the night of flopstar reminiscing! I loved Ellie, or Tina as her real name was, but at the time we already had Tina Cousins so they changed her name. Those 4 singles were excellent. The album isn’t AWFUL, it’s not a classic but I have heard WORSE. Her version of You’re No Good is excellent.
 
Anyway yes she was mentioned in the Solid HarmoniE thread and it made me listen to So Many Ways m and Don’t Want You Back

both absolute stellar songs
 
I had an inpromptu Ellie sesh the other night. Even boring old Sweet Lies has a certain nostalgic appeal for me now.

Funny how the only one nobody bothered to post was the only one that actually cracked the top 40:

‘Don’t Want You Back’ is still a great pop song, very much of its era, but could have done very well in the right hands (i.e not Ellie’s rubber-gloved mitts). The video is terrible - from the out of sync dancing, to the disinterested girlfriends, and non-plussed love interest.
 
Hurrah! I loved My Heart Will Find No Home and Never Gonna Give Up On Love back in the day. This is probably actually one of my most played albums of all time given how much I listened to it back then :D

I bought the SOUTH KOREAN release of this album at great expense which included a WIP mix of "Don't Want You Back" and is fun for people who don't hate "Baby Don't Dance".



Quite randomly, I remember an interview where Ellie mentioned a phobia of FROZEN PEAS and was cruelly presented with a bag resulting in a bit of a meltdown.
