22. "I Want To Come!"
Iso Tank, Season 1


This scene is a great example of the magic that exists when Saffy and Eddy get together for their role-reversal routine. A delightful mix of mother-daughter ironies, this is probably the closest hark-back to the French & Saunders sketch that started the series. In a nutshell, Eddy wants something, and Saffy is saying no.

What I love about this scene is the pacing. It's put together perfectly... Eddy in the background, obviously just bored, feigning an interest in Saffy's project,

"How's school sweetie?"
"I'm not AT school any more"
"Aren't you?"

which leads to the revelation that Saffy is having an open day at College. Cue Eddy suddenly having a reason to feel left out. You have to watch to see what happens, as Eddy recreates the classic teenage tantrum while Saffy quite literally ignores her. I mean she doesn't even raise an eyebrow. Eddy's frustration leads to her adopting a Romanian baby but that's only after a series of other threats...

"darling I'm going upstairs now and I'm going to take some pills and I'm going to kill myself."
"okay well let me know how many, so I don't call the ambulance to soon..."

This kind of OTT performance from Saunders only really works because Saffy refuses to react. It's sitcom gold.

Also if you continue to watch the clip you'll see again why Patsy was at her best in season 1, as her solution to the Romanian Baby comes in two stages...

"I can send them back can't I?"
"Sell 'em on! Mark 'em up, sell 'em on..."

"Here darling take these pills and everything will look much better in the morning... oh my God there is something horrible on the stairs!"
[Saffy] "It's ME"
"I'm not blind..."
"What are those pills?"
"Don't question me!"

Cleanin', Season 5

Unfortunately, this is only scene featured in season 5. Bit of an unfair dismissal because it does have some great moments, but this was a tough list to compile and the final season suffers the most.

I actually love the opening episode. It's ridiculous, like most episodes of that year, but Eddy is on fine form as Saunders turns her attention to the fickle and foolish world of British TV in the 21st Century. In comes Emma Bunton as her latest 'client' ("Emma Bunton? Tell her I've got SARS or something, I mean how desperate is she?") trying to figure out what Eddy has done to find her some work. Clearly, nothing:

"darling you need to get a single out"
"I HAVE got a single out!"
"have you... yes we knew that..."


Then of course comes the rant about how it's Emma's fault she's not getting the work and it's a classic Jennifer-channelling-Eddy monologue, culiminating in the quite brilliant tagline:

"I mean frankly, for once I would like to see you foaming in the mouth, stinking of piss in the gutter, with this little thumb stuck up Justin Timberlake's arse and you wearing nothing but a gucci belt! No? Well I think all we've got left is Mingin' Or Blingin With Gerri, so..."

the scene is loaded with other comedy moments - I love it when Patsy throws her phone out of the car (15 years on and she still won't let Eddy work) only to find out it was her phone... and I love the Saddam statue parked in the front room. Eddy's self-indulgence, impulsiveness, obsession with trend and money-no-object attitude summed up in one quick shot...

Still to me one of the funniest moments in sitcom history. Absolutely PERFECTLY played, passed off almost as a little piece of nothing thrilling but done SO SO WELL...I LOVE IT
 
...closely followed by my favourite line of the lot, the "OMG THERE'S SOMETHING HORRIBLE ON THE STAIRS"

(This is a long one, but it's just so funny there's no way to split it. It's one long kitchen scene of hilarity.)



If you're a fan of Fleur and Catriona, or just Ab Fab's satirical plunge into the fashion world in general, then this is the scene for you.

As I've said earlier, I love this extended feature episode, not just because it's a bit BARMY, but there are really sharp scenes. Especially this, the opening one.

They've all just got back from the fashion shows, and it's just wall to wall with quotable moments on the industry:

"Was it Winter?"
"No, Spring"
"Have we had Winter?"
"Last Summer..."

[saffy] "you still think it's of global importance that someone has reinvented hispanic morocco and applied it to a SHOE!"
[catriona] "Gosh have they?"
[fleur] "A SHOE? We must get one for Jeremy's!"

"who is the customer?"
"rich bitches who faces have been pulled back so tight that they can't see what they're buying..."



It just never ends. Anyway this all leads into Eddy talking yet again about Serge, and Gran accidently revealing that he's - SHOCK - gay. So Eddy suddenly and hilariously turns into fag hag numero uno ("he can fill me in on David and Liza, he can scream with me when Valentino comes up with a new flipflop!")

And as if this wasn't enough.... oh, BO. We get Bo in all her glory. To be honest, I don't think Bo has been better than in this episode. She's now a TV Minister, and if anyone has ever seen those God channels in America, you'll find this absolutely fucking hilarious. She just does it perfectly. Apart from the TV excerpt (in part 2, above) we also get a glimpse of her talking to reformed Lola (another Jane Horrocks character) in this short sequence from later in the episode. I actually think it's one of my favourite little bits from any scene or episode of the entire show

yeah, the Absolutely Everything boxset is only available in the U.S, Canada and Australia, for WHATEVER reason.

Parallox, season 4

I love the start of season 4, it was so promising!

It's basically just a classic Ab Fab scene. Eddy is driving Saffy crazy with her latest fads (we get Madonna's yoga, Jamie Oliver's cooking, office webcams and scooters thrown into one scene), while Patsy is back to her more subdued state after a dose of 'Parallox',

"she still has emotions you know! She just doesn't have to pay for them in wrinkles, that's all"
"I'm happy about that, can you tell?"
"No"
"Money well spent then..."

Plus Gran is around, and we never really know whether she's going batty or is just out to drive Eddy mad. Eddy always has great lines for her mum:

"ugh CHRIST, I thought we left her in the last millenium, is there no justice?"

Saffy is increasingly cranky in the fourth series and her battles with Patsy have become even more vicious, so there's plenty of bitchy moments.

And finally we also get the first cameo from Katy Grin. If anyone hasn't seen her Carpet Madness moment before, make sure you check out the end of this clip.

18. "It's just a little break!"
Menopause, Season 4

As opposed to the full scene which is still amusing, this is mostly just a rather fabulous moment when everyone realises that Patsy might have missed her menopause and is in some desperate need for HRT. After a quick massage on Eddy, Patsy snaps her wrist. In a hilariously uncomfortable moment, Patsy simply numbs her arm with an injection and snaps it back into place. You have to watch Eddy and Saffy's reaction to this :D

Patsy seems largely unconcerned about the pain and damage ("that's nothing, last week I snapped my ankle putting it into a Jimmy Choo") and Saffy is so disturbed she even turns to alcohol for comfort.

Completely unrelated to the scene in question, prior to the arm-snapping moment Patsy has an amazing line:

"Hello Alex, this is the mood board for the next edition: sex, bitch, aristo, sex, punk, whore, bitch, prossie, lessie, punk, tart, SLUT! Oh but Alex, Alex... with lovely shoes."

Also there's a fun bit at the beginning, which may not include the most LOL moments or lines but the idea is brilliant - Eddy has sent out Gran to find Madonna and Guy Ritchie's pad and befriend them so Eddy can infiltrate their inner circle, but Gran mistakently shacks up with Twiggy instead :D

17. "Me, Naomi and this water!"
Jealous, season 3

One of my favourite episodes. More to come from this later, but for now this is the opening scene at a PR Awards dinner with lots of special guest appearances. Naomi Campbell plays herself as Eddy pulls off a huge coup by landing her as a special client for the evening, while the FABULOUS Celia Imrie appears as Claudia Bing, Eddy's biggest PR rival.

Brilliantly mocking the shambles of an industry award ceremony, Eddy has bought and sponsored her category, and still fails to win. Claudia quite obviously wins over the judges by being even more obsequious and superficial than Eddy could ever aim to be. And we get even more Lulu laughs even when she doesn't appear:

"You can't sit there, that's LULU!"
"She's not here..."
"She's very SMALL!"

Patsy has some great lines too: after getting back from a bathroom session with Jason Donavan (Eddy: "is he still walking?") she sidles up to Naomi to make her feel welcome,

"I wish you could see the tragic cases that parade through my magazine every day just in search of a SPREAD! Anyway I just have to tell these tragic little wannabes, I tell them, I say darling, just stick your fingers down your throat, hack of your tits and don't come back until you're looking like something!"

Not many more LOL moments (although the above Lulu moment is so stupid it always has me in stitches) but it's amazingly well observed.

19 seems to be incorrectly titled, it's Parallox isn't it? That's a fun episode, I like Saffy as an awestruck and slightly clueless Blairite :D

My favourite bit in the menopause episode is Saffy again, when the leader of the group asks if she's joining them...

"No!"
"Oh - gone through it already I suppose..."

Death, season 2


Largely regarded as one of the best ever episodes of the entire run, this is the first of three sequences from this episode on the list.

This is where Eddy finds out about her Father's death, and although there are more famous scenes than this, I love this for two reasons: Eddy is at her most self-obsessed best, as she's far more concerned about her weight issues... and Gran is just as deluded, as we get the brilliant magazine quiz moment:

"now it's MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS! How many years was Margaret Thatcher Prime Minister? A, five hundred years, B, three thousand years, or C, eleven years... oh it's a trick question!"

and then later, in between Saffy and Eddy bickering,

"see they want you to say eleven years, and that makes me think that it must be A, five hundred years... it was a very long time!"

God bless Gran.

Of course this wouldn't be nearly as funny if it wasn't held together by a brilliant performance from Julia Swahala, who disaplays Saffy's genuine grief as the other mother and grandmother fuel her emotions with deluded methods of coping.

I had no idea when I read a few years back that she's only 10 years young than Jen.
 
Wiki does say Jen is 51 now.

She and Dawn WERE fairly young when they started out.

15. Slipknot! Papa Roach! Korn!
Fish Farm, season 4

This is my favourite scene (and episode) from season 4, and is actually the last time we see anything beyond seasons 1-3 (barring the specials). 4 and 5 had their moments, but 1-3 are just too bloody good.

Anyway, here we have Eddy and Patsy in a new fad: they want to be goths. Completely ridiculous but always believable as we know they'll go to any lengths to be what they feel is fashionable and "in". The irony as she mocks Saffy,

"you don't even know what we're talking about!"

until Patsy pipes in, grabbing the discman and headbanging until Eddy tells her,

"wait until I turn it ON, darling..."

Patsy gets tangled in the wires and we get some classic interaction between Saffy and Patsy,

"get your face away from me and your [gags] HAIR!"
"my hair isn't anywhere near you!"
"your FACE HAIR"

"keep still!"
"I AM STILL!"
"Patsy's very still darling, in fact what are you tonight sweetie?"
"rohypnol..."
"oh it's working..."

:D

Joanna Lumley is BRILLIANT in this bit, you just have to watch it to see...

Also, where does Lumley get that body from? :confused:

Hospital, season 2

Probably the most anticipated episode ever, this launched the second series after the massively successful and critically acclaimed first season. Many attribute this season, particularly the four-episode run of Hospital, Death, Morocco and Poor as the pinnacle of the franchise, featuring a mountain of famous moments, some already covered, and some yet to come.

The opening of season 2 is typical kitchen banter, this time centred around a scandal involving Patsy and an MP. Loads of great themes floating about - Patsy trying to seem upset but secretly loving the attention,

"In MY day, there was a sense of style about the whole thing, you know. Christine Keeler, Mandy Rice-Davies... GORGEOUS little women who kept their mouths shut and just looked GEORGEOUS, and gave the whole thing an air of dignity. You know, thats the way I should play it, Eddy. Not like these penny tarts of recent times. Kiss and tell, blurt it all out, for the promise of a quick buck and instant fame. Not ME, sweetie. My lips are SEALED."
"You'll do Hello! magazine, though?"
"Oh yeah, Eddy..."

While Saffy just can't help but rub it in as Patsy asks,

"who could possibly still be interested in all this?"
"his WIFE?"

and Gran 'accidentally' drives the wedge in,

"another pig-ugly MP making a fool of himself with some scrawny old hooker I see..."

:D

but my favourite bit is Patsy's horrible realisation that they've actually reported some truth:

"BASTARD! NO!"
[Eddy]"what what... 'Patsy Stone... [gasps] 47'?"
"NOOOOO! I'll SUE!"
[saffy] "well how old ARE you?"
"I'm 39!"
[saffy] "and I'm an ovum..."
