I really need to re-watch it myself. I've forgotten a lot of it. You're right though, what really sets it apart is how layered Kudrow's performance is. She's an awful person but also very pitiable.
 
I loved it, too. I found a lot of it quite uncomfortable though, and not exactly super enjoyable. It was genius, but in a lot of ways quite offputting. I certainly don't think it could have extended itself much beyond the one season. The point had been made.
 
I agree. In retrospect, it was extremely uncomfortable viewing. I guess that only goes to show just how right they got it though.
 
the range of emotions when she walked in to find her shrine/wall completely ruined, and then taking a call from her agent to find out whether the show got picked up or not, is just amazing. You feel exhausted just watching it!

the bit where she goes in to meet the writers to find out her character is being changed is just excrutiating. And when she's at the back in the photoshoot wearing a shellsuit :D it's just rejection after disappointment after rejection, but it never feels OTT because there are still elements where she is considered a star, such as the young actress who idolises her - it makes her character more believable and layered, and not just some comedy foil. The intricacies are amazing

I'm totally overanalysing it :D but there's just so much to it...

Thanks to Frozen (not the song, the user :basil:) I found out about this thread and I just wanted to add to all the previous comments about The comeback, that it is a MUST SEE!

It was so difficult to watch at times, especially due to Kudrow's spot-on performance! She made you feel for her and get irritated by her desparation to get back on the fame train at the same time.

I watched this 2 years ago I think, so I should probably buy the DVD now.

Also, Web therapy, her online show is also great stuff, especially because they only have storylines and they improvide their dialogues (that's what I understood from watching a behind-the-scenes video). Well worth watching too!
 
Entertainment Weekly recently named this as one of the TEN most important tv shows of the last decade... it was ranked alongside the likes of Sopranos, The Wire, The Office, American Idol and Lost, so it's QUITE the achievement all things considered...

I just remembered the episode where she does the cover for Yoga Weekly despite a complete inability to perform even the most basic yoga position.

As with everything on that show, it's especially funny because you just KNOW that countless celebrities are doing the exact same thing all the time in real life.

That list had no Mad Men and is therefore null and void.

Anyway, I rewatched this recently and absolutely LOVED IT, even more so than the first time. I adore the episode where she is convinced by the young ones to stay at home, and then finds out they all went in.

"I CAN'T GET MY SHOE ON, I CAN'T GET MY SHOE ON!!!!"

And then when she comes back home to find her step-daughter drinking, and her friends going "I thought you said she was to cool", to Valerie screaming "I AM COOL, I'M JUST NOT A CRIMINAL!!" hysterically.

Too much :D.

Gilmore Girls is VERY highly regarded among certain groups in the US. There was an OUTCRY when it was cancelled. I've never watched it but it's one of those where you either hate it, have never seen it, or think it's the best thing ever.

Anyway I think GG and The Comeback were added as statements... like, "yes you've probably never heard of these shows but they're amazing, go check em out"...

I have a soft spot for Gayle Tuesday :D She's no Lisa Kudrow, but to be fair she WAS doing that crap celebrity schtick a good decade before this show came along...

I've just realized the woman who asks her co-worker to show how everything he touches turns to Skittles was in The Comeback. The agent who agrees to see Val...

I need to re-watch this again (again) though. The thing is, you start to consider where other people are coming, even the hateful Paulie G (or at least you see that he's a Hollywood TYPE who's resenting being on the comedown on sorts, at a stage in his life that is recognized by that old guy who actually loosely is who he plays). I think the most hateful person in it is the fat too gay to function guy from Mean Girls (what a shit actor).

The stage is set for The Comeback to make a comeback. Yep, you read that right. HBO and The Comeback producers Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow are in talks to revive the cult-hit series, according to reports.

Kudrow starred as Valerie Cherish, a former sitcom star who stages an acting comeback with a new sitcom and a reality star. Malin Akerman and Kellan Lutz also appeared in the original HBO series. Kudrow and King were both nominated for an Emmy for their work on the series.

The show lasted for one season on HBO in 2005, but achieved cult status following its cancellation.

Since its cancellation, the show's profile has grown. In 2013, Kudrow said she and King talk about the fate of Valerie Cherish. When viewers last saw her, her reality show debuted and was a hit.

"Every time we get together for lunch, we're talking about, ‘OK, so what would happen next?' So we are talking," Kudrow told Andy Cohen on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live. In her mind, Valerie is "taking classes at the Actor's Studio. Just because…We really want her to be on a Bravo show." King backed up Kudrow's lunch story in February 2014. "Lisa and I actually have had a couple of lunches lately where we've been missing Valerie and wondering where she'd be. That's just a creative exploration Lisa and I are doing," King told EW. "We care so much about Valerie and the work that we did that, in hindsight, felt so edgy. Lisa and I have been amusing ourselves, and maybe somebody else might be amused in the future.

The second season of The Comeback would be "Valerie getting what she wanted and what fresh hell that would be,"King said.

The return of The Comeback is apropos. Fellow cult-hit shows Arrested Development and Veronica Mars both returned to life, the former on Netflix, the latter with a movie.

The return of The Comeback is something we DO want to see.

Quite possibly the best TV show of all time. Huh? HUH? Partly why I enjoy it so much is that you can watch it repeatedly and sympathize with different people, although not all clearly. And once it does come back, and only after, Val can appear on Web Therapy.
 
The original run was ahead of its time I think. It felt then like the sheer humiliation Valerie endured to maintain her grip on celebrity went a bit too far. Nowadays it's obvious she was barely scratching the surface.

I NEED a new series just to see Valerie embracing social media. It would be even more mortifying than Madonna's Instagram account.
 
I want to watch this again soon although I have other viewing priorities at the moment, but I skimmed through the Korean Barbacue episode this morning and completely forgotten about "I haven't been licked like that since 1943...grrr".

Valerie Cherish really is one of the greatest performances, comedy or otherwise, of the century.
