Westlife are back again

I remember my cousin saying after Westlife had just formed that they were originally a 6 piece called Westlive then they changed it and debuted at #1 - was never 100% as it seemed quite covered up.

I love how Louis' comparisons haven't got any better, when he makes these general stereotypical comments on the X Factor it's quite apparent he's always been like that. Paije the new Luther Vandross anyone?

Yes, and I don't think it was ever 'covered up', was it? I'm sure I remember hearing them talk about it on cd:uk or the like.

Yeah - it was never covered up. They won the Best New Tour Act at Smash Hits! 1998 as Westside if I remember rightly. It's just they had legal problems with the name and had to change it before the first single was released.

Anyway, this article was referenced on The Xtra Factor tonight. Kian and Louis both insisting it was all taken completely out of context...

How utterly bizarre. It's not too surprising that Westlife used to be cunts - most popbands have their share of bitching, but I'm surprised they're so dismissive of Brian still, and I'm surprised at how nasty rather than buffoonish Louis sounds.

There's got to be some truth in it I'm sure, why else would Louis be at such pains to "clear everything up" on live national TV?

Suddenly they all seem far more interesting.

What an interesting read. There are even more details now talked about than in the biography, which was also quite surprising in some parts.

If they had any manners they could give the 3 kicked-off band members some of their millions. It wouldn't hurt these multi-millionaires.

ARE they multi-millionaires? I know they've sold shitloads of records, but I thought manufactured popband members were notoriously underpaid? And given half of their back catalogue are covers, it's not like they can expect to be pulling in the songwriting royalties.

They really earned a lot. They got each a million dollar for the WOOO tour back then.
And after reading the book I know they really have a very comfortable life with absolutely no problems with money.

Interesting lyrics in "Chances" :disco:

If I had the chance to start again
Then you would be the one I'd come and find
Like a poster of Berlin on my wall
Maybe there's a chance our walls might fall

Must be a bad sign for the album. What's their lowest peak there?

After listening to the album a few times I am convinced "Safe" was the among the worst single choices.

"Tell me it's love" would have been the perfect single. It is mid-tempo, great chorus, catchy etc.

In general the album needs a few listens, but it is a solid pop album, exactly what you could expect when Westlife and John Shanks meet.

Not bad and for pure pop-lovers a better choice than "Progress", but it's all very samey of course.

Brian McFadden speaks rubbish on twitter:

I had a dream tonight I was back on stage with westlife playing some crazy sized flootball stadium. I'm not gonna lie! I woke up smiling
If I'm to be honest yes I would love to do an album with boys and show jls and take that what we are really made of!
If the boys wanna challenge these newcomers I am always up for a fight. Thay know where. I am. Armed and ready to reclaim glory!
The reason I'm feeling like this is I watch my boys release an incredible emmotive song ang video and it play third fiddle to average
@Pauline_Walsh and they don't have five percent of the albums we sold! (Talking about TAKE THAT)
When will folk them the credit they deserve. They are not xfactor band. They hard working creative machine who sacrafised a lot to get here
They will always be my brothers. No matter what happens I will support them til the day they hang up the mikes.

What could make one laugh:

Beautiful Tonight echoes the crisp, euphoric electronic pop of Erasure, claims Shane, while banger No One’s Gonna Sleep Tonight is “Westlife does the Black Eyed Peas.”

I'm a big fan of artists doing track-by-tracks.

"Before It's Too Late" was written for a X-Factor winner actually.

I'm so fucking pissed off about that. After reading in this thread that they were bound for the lower top 20 with iTunes sales, I thought the game was FINALLY up, but of course it wasn't.

27th top ten hits are quite amazing.
But don't expect another single of this album then :D

Um, well isn't that their USUAL tactic anyway? Release ONE single at Xmas, then no more to keep their chart run in tact. :sour: Fucking CUNTS. And I hate how they mentioned on twatter they had their 27th top 10 hit. They're like a UK Mariah!

Live performance of "Viva la vida"

Great acoustic set.

WORLD EXCLUSIVE of the 2nd single (I Will Reach You) on THE NATIONAL LOTTERY SHOW :D

It's not exactly the HEADY DAYS of FROZEN in 1998 is it?

Also hasn't this album done over 300k according to the year end albums thread unless i was reading it wrong? Seems like they're safe yet, PUN INTENDED

Yes but still comfortably their least successful album yet. For all intents and purposes they're a spent force.

It's the LOWEST POINT of their career that's a fact. But let's face it, Daniel O Donnell carries on regardless and they're ESSENTIALLY the same act...

Exactly - the fact that having a 300k+ selling album as their LOWEST, 12 years later, doesn't fill me with too much joy!

I was hoping the album would fade as quickly as the single did, but it did sell a decent number of copies, enough to ensure we get another handful anyway.

I will say this for them, they know their market well.

They could easily carry on for years putting out 300K+ albums at Xmas and touring arenas, and they're far less present and offensive to ME.

That aside, it must be a bit frustrating for them to become a 1-single-a-year-sold-on-an-X-Factor-performance-act. Wwhenever they release a new album, they totally talk it up in the press - we've worked so hard to develop a new sound, we weren't happy that we couldn't release any singles or noncovers from the last one etc. etc. Then it's exactly the same format again.

It does seem to be diminishing returns. I guess it's a question of how much further they fall before they level out. But I suspect there's a couple of albums left in them at least yet.
