So what is the general consensus on this collection? Seems strange for Madge to have a ballads collection but this was the whole damage control time (after Erotica etc) and did lead nicely to Evita and then ROL.

I uploaded it to my iPhone yesterday and it really is rather fantastic. I haven't actively listened to her in about two years (thanks to Hard Candy pretty much putting me off her for life), but it was a lovely reminder this morning of just how bloody brilliant she can be.

"...Playground", "Rain", "You'll See", "I'll Remember", "Take A Bow"... a lot of her early 90's ballads are surely up there with the best tracks she's put her name to.

Opinions?

It's the greatest artist compilation album ever made.

Ever, ever.

Madonna + ballads + her 90s vocal = I'm in.

Madonna + Some half arsed disco + her current vocal = I'm out.

It flows beautifully, it's an almost perfect selection of her output (I would have thrown in Sanctuary but I'm biased), its timing was perfect, it contains crucial classics not featured on other releases, and it contains my favourite Madonna track ever.

It was actually this album that made me a proper fan. When I first realised what she TRULY had to offer beyond the obvious hits.

The only glaring left-out track for me was "Bad Girl". Replace "Something To Remember" or "One More Chance" with it and I'd be well pleased.

See I was happy with the omission of Bad Girl, I feel they got it right there.

I don't mind the track at all when I'm in that early 90s moody fuck you Madonna mood, but I don't think it fits on the album. It's a bit DARK. I also resent that it was a single so soon into the album when Rain hadn't even been released and tracks like Waiting and Why's It So Hard never got a look in.

Nice video though.

Imagine a Something To Remember Part 2 :o

You Must Love Me
Drowned World/Substitute For Love
The Power Of Goodbye
Little Star
What It Feels Like For A Girl
Gone
Paradise (Not For Me)
Time Stood Still
Be Careful
Nothing Fails
Love Profusion
Easy Ride
Miles Away
Devil Wouldn't Recognise You

It probably wouldn't sell at all :D but I'd love it

Ah yes I forgot it was released earlier than Rain. Was it third (after Erotica and Deeper and Deeper)? I wonder if Rain would've been any bigger had it come third.

I do see what you mean looking at it now, the whole collection, whilst ballads, isn't actually dark. Even "You'll See" is more defiant than dark.

I'd still possibly rank Bad Girl as my favourite M ballad ever though :o

I probably haven't listened to this in years but it is a wonderful collection. As funky said the selection of songs (and the specific versions used) and order of them was brilliantly thought out - perhaps her only compilation where that is the case on all those fronts. And more importantly, there are a number of songs here that I personally don't have much in for as stand alone tracks, but together they compliment each other so well you can't help but be drawn into the bigger picture and love them. Except for "One More Chance", which shouldn't even qualify as a b-side.

As for omitted songs, "The Look of Love" is the only one that really bothers me. It's such a forgotten song and this really could have given it a second breath (and perhaps secured a place on a tour setlist at some juncture since she'd have more reason to remember she actually recorded a song by that name 25 years ago).

I've always wondered if "Rain" could have acted as her "Beautiful" during that era (to an admittedly much less successful extent of course) had they rushed it out as the second single. On the other hand by the time she put it out the storm had calmed quite a bit so it may have benefited to some degree from the delayed release.

Anyway, along with "I Want You" it's probably my favourite Madonna ballad of that decade (depending on how you label "Frozen").

They'd have to call it Something To FORGET!

That said, this is a very good collection.

I was thinking that, but then it did fairly well as it was (if not remembered/played as much as it should be since). I'm more shocked Fever did as well as it did given it's such an average track and was during the 'backlash' period.

I rarely play it as a COMPILATION but it is a great collection. And "Bad Girl" is one of the top three songs on Erotica for the record*

A stunning collection. One More Chance was one of those 'oh that is Madonna?' moments I had at the time that made me more and more intrigued by her, until when the title of Ray of Light and Frozen were announced and I knew I was going to buy them both. It wasn't until then that I got her other albums and became obsessed. You'll See is the kind of song I only WISH I could belt out at karaoke.

A Something To Remember 2 would be pretty shit as she stopped making ballads on the same scale, although the Ray of Light singles, What It Feels Like For A Girl and the Jason Nevins edit of Nothing Fails would be pretty lovely. Love Profusion is a favourite of mine, and one of the few American Life tracks I love in a big way but "makes me feel bad when I get in a bad mood" or whatever she's crowing on about is quite a drop in standards. Her ballads used to be so impeccable. I must say though, Devil Wouldn't Recognize You was quite the surprise when I gave Hard Candy one more chance.

Oh it's GRAND in't it. I don't even mind CRAZY FOR YOU in this context even though I never cared for it much otherwise, although I could certainly live without LOVE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE, which is the only BLOT on an otherwise IMMACULATE COLLECTION

Flawed, but a gorgeous compilation nevertheless. Love Don’t Live Here Anymore and One More Chance are on there, but Pray For Spanish Eyes and Promise To Try aren’t? Still love it though.

Surprised I gave TUTBMP an EIGHT in 2011. It's easily in my Madonna all time top twenty (ish) these days.

WHEW this would be a DAY ONE PURCHASE + BONUS TRACK 'Has To Be' :disco:

Of course, but double vinyl please

I still can't forgive them* for that stupid vinyl single disc riessue - if anything was crying out for a clear/white vinyl double vinyl reissue it was STR '95. Ugh.

(* there is no 'them.' No label, no team. Nothing. Just some gay intern at RHINO US I guess.)

I think I need To Have And Not To Hold, I Deserve It and Joan Of Arc.

Can we make this into some sort of MOOPY POLL? I'd quite like the result as a Spotify playlist, thankyouplease.

Madonna's vinyl reissues are SUCH A FLOP!

Music just SHOVED into a SLIPSLEEVE :argh:

I know ONE DAY they will all be lovingly remastered with extensive linear notes, coloured vinyl and unseen photographs :D AND YES, I will buy them ALL OVER AGAIN!

I did toy with 'To Have & Not to Hold' but it didn't make it on my thematic tracklist - there's a method in the madness there.

'Joan of Arc' too but perhaps as demo version. The final version was too 'poppy'.

'I Deserve It' is too Guy-centric. I bet she hates it now. So it would never make it.
