So, after three years of trying desperately, and getting into Ultraviolence before this breakthrough opus, Born to Die has finally clicked. I'd argue that the former has more of an atmosphere, and more of a mood piece, accordingly, but what a superb collection of songs this is.

This was my favourite album of 2012 but I can't even rate it because I've totally forgotten half the songs. Probably more my issue than the album's as I'm sure I'd still enjoy it if I revisited...
 
The songs I love I truly LOVE, and think will continue to endure for years. The other half of the album is just quite good.

i really should revisit - totally hated it at the time. after living for video games and blue jeans, born to die ticked me off a bit and i thought a lot of the album was overproduced and she was an annoying fucking try hard on a lot of the tracks.

fortunately paradise turned it all around.

Really? Perhaps I need to give it another try as this album only clicked with me recently, but "Ride" and "American" are the only keepers I have found on there.

i love all of paradise, it took me a while to get back on board the lana express but it did the trick. not a single track i skip.
 
Don't get her. She's like Marina And The Diamonds, the only great song she made was unfortunate enough to be her first single.

Odd to see "This Is What Makes Us Girls" rated so low by most. The funny thing is that I always read the title not as "this is the kind of thing that qualifies us to describe ourselves as girls" but rather in the same context as "this is going to be the making of you".

This album - particularly 'Summertime Sadness' - reminds me of spending a bleakly amusing two months with someone with legs so fat he could hardly walk, cleaning the kitchen like a fishwife while he was on the dog chatting about football, and a vile pork and aubergine stir fry which I had to force down to be polite, so not the most joyful of associations

What was I THINKING? :grr:

I can't believe she never included Driving In Cars With Boys on this album. It's such a great song, although the demo version (with the higher pitched chorus) is far superior to the finished version (with the lower pitch).

As stated before, I only got into this last summer and now I'm hooked. However, judging from the rates above, you all seem to dislike the songs I love the most.

I thought Without You, Lolita and Lucky Ones were from the Paradise album. They're all 8-10/10. :disco:
 
I'm a few weeks late on this, but Born to Die is among the top ten longest running albums on the Billboard 200 of all time! :o

Obviously the landscape has changed a lot in the past decade, with sales plummeting and the inclusion of streaming and all that, but for an artist with only one major radio hit, it feels like a huge accomplishment. The album has shifted 1.4 million in pure sales.

Obviously there is the fat legs thing, but actually I think that 'Ultraviolence' and 'Honeymoon' are MUCH more cohesive and significantly more fabulous than this EVER was. Although 'Ride' (which wasn't really on 'Born To Die' anyway) remains :smoke: incarnate

Born to Die reaches 400 weeks on the Billboard 200 this week. It's been outselling Chemtrails since April :(

@LanaDelRey's 'Born to Die' has now spent 400 weeks on the Billboard 200. It's the first major label debut album by a female artist to reach this milestone.

I wonder which albums have spend longer than her to need those rather specific caveats :D I love a contrived stat!

to be fair, I thought the same. I believe she's still top three for female overall, which is the sexier stat. I think Adele and Fleetwood Mac are the only female/female centric acts ahead of her at this point. She passed that bitch Carole ages ago! And Adele dropped off the chart months ago, so who knows it may pass her some day (probably not).

I guessed Adele was the only one ahead of her, since 21 wasn’t her debut. Was BTD not Lana’s debut either, but first on a major label? Extra sneaky :D

I was sitting for literal minutes thinking what indie starlet outsold her with a debut... then I realized :D

Schizophrenic simultaneously named highest selling solo debut by a female former girl group member brit who also has ginger hair and invented tea towel dress found DEAD
 
Born to Die's video is 10 years old today.



not a song I go back to much, but instrumental in making her a legend and that video is simply chock full of iconique imagery :disco:
 
“Born to Die” the song has held up better than much of the album for me, which I still love. The DRAMA. And the visuals for those first two, or three, albums were magnificent.
 
I do miss Lana being a remix queen. We really haven’t gotten any since L4L and they haven’t been any good since Ultraviolence!
 
An anniversary edition with some of this stuff would be the chicken's tits but I somehow suspect we're onto absolutely zilch.
