The gay anthem for straight people, until gay anthems became considerably better.

I can't think there has ever been a bit of discussion about this song on Moopy. Has it just been DQ'd to death, is it just awful or is anyone embarrassed to mention they like it due to the connotations?

I think its a brilliant song but it being karaoke'd to death means its not quite a 10 for me

Valerie letting loose is how I imagine Kala was when he met monsta, after a few vodkas which gave him an appalling hangover (not that he'd had a drink for months)

The orchestral flourishes in Gloria's version always remind me of the this:

The thing with ubiquitous tracks like this is - they tend to become ubiquitous for a reason.

The Dancing Queen of spurned woman disco.
 
I find it irresistible and I like it whenever a sample is used in another song.
 


There was an amazing remix of this on Big Mix 96 (volume 2) if I recall rightly.

It's a 9 for me because although it's bloody great I came to it through its ubiquity (rather than most classics I'd give a 10, which I mostly came to through looking up music of my own accord) and so it's easier for me to admire and reference as a classic than to truly love. TOTALLY would have been a 12455/10 had I been there when it first came out, I'm sure.

That said while just trying to place where else I've heard the famous string post-chorus I just remembered that Cher - Strong Enough totally pays homage (:eyes:) and that's in my top twenty of all time, so maybe that's the outlet for my adoration for this :D
 
I always think it's an 8 or so because of its ubiquity but when I hear it, I remember it's a STONE COLD ELEVEN and NO MISTAKE! Truly UNTOUCHABLE :disco:
 
It's great but whenever it comes on I usually kinda roll my eyes, not because it sounds bad but because everyone just loses their shit over it. I'm obviously biased because I lose my shit over HERO but wuh-evuh!
 
I love it down to the Diana Ross cover (Motiv8 remix). I guess it plays to my well hidden dramatic instincts. It let's it all let loose. I'd even dance to it with an overweight old man just to pretend I'm a faded sitcom actress back on the rise again.

I LOVED the 1994 (?) re-release as a young gay, although I thought the lyric was ''and that crumble'' instead of "do you think I'd crumble" which meant for a while I thought the entire song was based around a traditional British pudding going wrong and causing the breakdown of a relationship.

Also I remember seeing her on TOTP one week with short hair, and the next with a BOB and being baffled at how her hair had managed to grow so quickly :eyes:

While this is as iconic as it gets (naturally the winner of the Best Disco Record at the Grammys on the only occassion it was awarded in the biggest disco year of 1979, when there was a backlash), I've never thought it was a good song.

Its sheer overexposure in the 90s was terrifying, used for every dance around your handbag hen night there was. That Sister Sledge-aping house mix was really taking the piss.

I thought this was its nadir



But after Chantay Savage and Miss Ross weighed in it may have plumbed even greater depths

Despite it being one of those songs that I've heard far too many times and would happily never listen to again it's unquestionably a 10/10 song.
 
It's obviously a fantastic pop song but I really have no desire to ever hear it again.
