I think ubiquity makes it very easy to underrate Can't Get You Out of My Head. Having not listened to it through choice for a fair old time, revisiting it today I was struck by how good it really is. The production is absolutely immaculate. It's such a headphones record - I think hearing it in the background on the radio, which is the context in which I've probably heard it the most in the past ten years, might flatten it somewhat.

I would agree with that (and in the wider context about a lot of other songs as well).

Of course, I've never been massively KEEN. Objectively it's a stone-cold classic and there's no denying that her star power was absolutely huge at this time.

I don't hate it by any means, but it doesn't whip me into a fever () either. For me, 'Love At First Sight' remains the absolute gold standard from that era - even now that synth melody is just DIVINE and impossibly uplifting. Of course, the two songs aren't REALLY comparable because they're trying to achieve different things.

I love In Your Eyes and LAFS, but for me they're great songs, where this is something else. It goes beyond the call of duty, whereas the other hits from the era were merely serviceable by comparison.

The sheer joy of LAFS gives it the edge for me on a day-to-day basis, but this is clearly the more iconic track. I never really got on with In Your Eyes. It just feels a bit empty.

I agree. I think it was a good second single though in the sense that it almost sounds like it was conceived to throw under the bus - the follow-up to CGYOOMH was ALWAYS going to be known as "The song that came after CGYOOMH" and in that sense it was a bit of an easy sacrifice because it's a solid continuation of the 'Fever' sound but one that serves as no major loss to being somewhat forgotten in the aftermath of its predecessor.

I remember the first time I heard it was on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. I don't think it was its premiere or anything. I was half asleep and within the first 30 seconds I'd sat bolt upright and by the 2 minute mark, I was on my feet actually dancing with joy. And not a single bit of that is hyperbole...it truly was that instant, that brilliant and that joyous for me. I had tears in my eyes that something could be that good, particularly by one of my favourite artists.

Yes, time has dimmed it through overplay, but VoR is SO right about the headphone thing. It is IMMACULATELY produced. It sounds so minimalist but so much is going on. And she gets scant credit for the way she sells it- it's absolutely perfect for her.

Personal rank of the songs in terms of how I feel this very moment is actually

...but with all being 10/10. Having said that, if I had to order them in how GOOD they actually are in terms of songs, then it's Head-LAFS-IYE *fairly big gap* CIMW. The latter being such an obvious retread of the big hit...

Couldn't be anything else but a 10 for me too.
My favourite bit is close to the end after 'stay forever and ever and ever....' and yes, you HAVE to listen to it with headphones on.
It's the song that does what it says on the tin. Absolute ear worm.

No one mentioned so far which live performance of that they like the best.
For me it's between the X-tour version and the Showgirl Homecoming version.

WHAT A TUNE! Especially the single edit. So much better than dreary old (but still quite good) In Your Eyes.

Anyway, "Head" is quite simply as good as pop music gets. It's probably one of a small handful of songs I could say are the reason I love pop and consider it an art form. I don't believe pop songs, for whatever reason, come this well crafted in the current decade - this song is truly the result of songwriter and artist coming together at their PEAK to create something that could only have been born at that specific time. And yet it isn't dated at all. I've still never heard another song that sounds anything like it, probably never will.

Really? I think it's a pretty tenuous comparison really. Head has some disco influences and some similar vocal inflections but that's it. Hardly sister songs.

It's obviously heavily inspired by I Feel Love, although it's certainly not a rip-off or anything. More of a perfectly realised modern (in 2001) homage.

This past weekend the DJ at the club I was at (it was actually DJ Argonaut, who I've seen mentioned here before - by monsta I think?) mixed Blue Monday into this*, which is the obvious choice for a transition, but it was truly an out of body experience to experience the two songs together in a club for the first time
