Poor Geri is still HAUNTED by letting this one get away :(

To be fair, it probably would have charted at about #15 AT BEST, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's an absolute fucking corker.

The best thing she ever DID and bear in mind she has a STRING of 10/10s from her EARLY OEUVRE. She'll never come CLOSE AGAIN.

Last time I heard it it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered it. It lacks the warmth and joy of say Mi Chico Latino. 8/10 at the most.

I think "Mi Chico Latino" is actually her best, now I've had time to reflect but BY GOD THEY'RE BOTH GREAT

The most annoying part of this for me personally as a REMIX ENTHUSIAST is that it missed the opportunity to get some fuck-off amazing mixes

I don't think it would have been a much bigger hit than Desire. Ride It was a pretty minor success despite the high peak, wasn't it? I don't feel there was much appetite for anything Geri did at this point

Poor Christian. The horror of having to contend with an unedited Geri.

As for the song, it's the right side of MEH. But only just.

"Ride It" was annoying because it was not a BAD song for the time per se, but it was handled so cheaply. That VIDEO! :zombie:

Yes, the label wanted this, Geri insisted on Desire.

At the time "Desire" seemed an absolutely TERRIBLE idea (which it was) but time has grown its appeal...again, once it got away from that video. I quite like it now...it was a relatively brave move for her, though- I fail to see how it was more radio friendly than "Love Never Loved Me"

even if this had charted at #15 VoR it would have been miles better than Desire which bombed completely and even if she had been dropped after it, at least she could say she left on a high.

10/10 - the best thing she's ever done along with MCL.

I want to know who the head of her record company is, and what record company :o Unless she's talking for the spice girls reunion

She admitted recently that she realises now that this would have been a hit had she decided to release it. I'm sure she said during a Q&A that one of her regrets during her solo years was not launching the Passion era with LNLM. From what I know it was written for the shelved Disco Sister Music 'concept' album which was supposed to be an album of uptempo disco tracks before she has a disagreement with the record company who told her to go back and record some more contemporary sounding tracks - Desire being one of them.

Her reasons for not wanting it to be released are typical 'Geri'. Initially she claimed it felt too personal to be released as a single as it was a song about never finding love and being eternally single; she also claimed at one point that she felt it was a 'patchwork quilt' of a song as it was an amalgamation of several attempts at songwriting from over the years - the middle-eight in LNLM was actually taken from the first song she wrote and recorded pre-Spice Girls, and she said when it came to writing LNLM she couldn't be bothered to think up anything for the middle-eight so she suggested some old lyrics. I'm pretty sure she also claimed she didn't want to be 'dancing around in hotpants in a video' when she was still suffering with her bulimia and body dysmorphia althogh that's pretty much what she ended up doing in the Ride It video.

All that aside, Love Never Loved Me remains one of her best songs and handled correctly at the time could have been one of her biggest hits. I'm not entirely sure the public were completely fed up with her by 2004, Ride It reached #4 after all and while it's good it's nothing outstanding, and had this have had a big budget video, some decent performances and promotion I'm sure the Passion era would have ended differently.

10/10.

This is in her top 10 current on spotify for the first time in years I think. The very low daily count towards that end of her chart make me warm inside that my streams are probably contributing greatly.

Off to promote down MORRISONS this afternoon randomly shouting 'Tout l'heure mon amour' whilst keeping a tally chart of promised streams for those that refuse to do it on the spot.

“Tout à l’heure” @Halli

Geri Halliwell is no reason to let our French standards slip…
