Old TOTP (BBC4)

What with Dexy's Midnight Runners and JoBoxers, I was wondering what was with the "my ol' man's a dustman" chic in 1983.

Just catching up on the 2nd episode from last week.

So far JoBoxers and Dexys were both lousy. The episode is redeemed by Culture Club and Twisted Sister. First sniff of hair metal, which is another story of 80s music...

I think OOH TO BE AHH by KAJAGOOGOO might be in the running for the WORST TOP TEN HIT EVER. What a VAPID BUNCH of NOTHINGNESS!

Although that song by the guy in a leather waistcoat and trews with prancing dolly birds going on about being YOUNG FREE AND SINGLE was also rather LOATHSOME. THANKS BUT NO THANKS

Digging GARY DAVIS in his WHITE SLACKS though. And who knew what ANDY PEEBLES looked like?

Good to see Bauhaus. They actually looked like they were on the verge of splitting up (which they were...and did).

I have to say I didn't know Sweet Dreams. What a load of sub-Bucks Fizz shit.

I actually thought the BBC website had fucked up when they said the show featured Sweet Dreams and Eurythmics....

Not really feeling Kissing the Pink, although I like female vocal. They all look mental, which feasibly is the case. I see they never had another hit.

I missed the beginning of the show but as soon as I saw SWEET DREAMS I thought "OH NO THIS YEAR'S E*R*V*S**N HOPEFULS*

Blue Monday playing out with a super 1980s audience cutting some serious shapes is totally :disco:

One of them is Carrie Grant, the bloke is the New Bobby in (Formerly Of) Bucks Fizz. So who's the other one? She's sure got a lot to live up to.

Now THIS is an astonishingly strong episode... Poison Mind, Fascination, Temptation... and er FR David!

Quite enjoyed that one - a shame The Human League weren't live in the studio, what with the beef between them and Heaven 17...

Spandau Ballet finally making the transition from tolerably bland to utter shit as well.

Catching up on a few episodes now.

Steve Wright's quip about Tracey Ullman being the funniest woman on TV 'apart from Boy George' was quite something.

I always thought they were SHIT, even at the time.

And not JUST because I never got the TOOTHY DRUMMER to complete my Smash Hits sticker album

I love Too Shy, but Ooh to be Aah is truly terrible. They're a really annoying looking band, particularly...

It's a weird situation where Limahl is not the most annoying person in a group of people.

Did the Eurythmics ever actually appear on TOTP?

Dunno if this is yet to come, or if the whole episode has been Yewtreed.

And with a young Eddi Reader as well. How many Brits have those two got between the pair of them?

I don't think I'd realised how much Eddi Reader looks like Alison Moyet before. Presumably only after Moyet had the gastric band.

It must have been Yewtreed. It was in the top 5 for what seemed like weeks and then Love Is A Stranger took it's place, I've only seen videos.

Who is ruining it for us at this stage? I assume DLT as I presume Jimmy Saville's TOTP presenting days are largely a thing of the past by 1983.

Seeing that clip from TOTP2 makes me think it's a shame they don't just make more new TOTP2 episodes from all the Yewtreed episodes. How hard could it be?

Is it only those episodes they are choosing not to show, do we know? There seem to be so many weeks being skipped, I wonder if there is some other reason they are missing weeks.

I dunno, let's ask @Kate, as Mr Kate seems to be in the know. It's not like Gary Glitter was still having hits. Maybe the BBC are holding their ground on Cliff(!)

Bad news is Jonathon King presents Christmas 1985.

Some presenting stats:

Lulu (3)
Kylie (3)
Dale Winton (3)
Gary Glitter (3)
Bear van Bears? (5)
Dannii (2)

Other presenters apparently included Whigfield, Gina G and Reg Presely. Although they're from the heady days of the 1990s. Don't think there's available information on who presented future episodes, but we can assume the Lulu and Glitter ones will be removed too.

Apparently Mike Smith episodes are also not shown. Which is a shame as he's on 82-88. So between Saville, DLT, Smith and Glitter I don't think any decade will be free from a culling.

What did Mike Smith do, other than leave the fragrant Sarah Greene a widowed millionaire?

Apparently he refused to sign an agreement that they could be reshown. Before dying obvs
