RuPaul's Drag Race (1 Viewer)

...and this show is the one he raised a huge amount for via crowdfunding.

He's deleted/deactivated his Twitter now as well.
 
It can’t be easy because the Drag race fandom is some of the most loon I have EVER seen when it comes to being obsessed about something. Some of them were even calling up the workplaces of suspected contestants and finding out where they lived to stalk their homes etc to find out if they were actually on the show, sending them gifts to their home addresses etc. To quote a certain queen ‘It’s all too fucking much!’

Especially when a lot of people only really care for your character and not for you as a person, it can be easy for your drag persona to take over. You’re a nobody by name but a star as a character. that can’t be easy. I can’t remember who it was but someone said they were tired of being called by their drag name when they weren’t in character by people.

I hope he gets the help he needs and comes back stronger next year.

How easy will it be to watch? I imagine if people are able to watch it, there's definitely enough interest for it to warrant its own thread.
 
They'll be online for sure, I don't know about the subtitles. But there has to be enough interest in the DR loons world to subtitle this.
 
Because this won't be in English, right? I know some Asian shows like Got Talent or The Amazing Race are in English, because they're international. I wish.
 
So I only started watching this last year and have naturally grown to love it. Only on season 7 so far. A few thoughts:

-On the advice of this place and elsewhere I started with season 4 but I feel a bit annoyed I didn't start from the very beginning now as it's clearly an ongoing arc of sorts with lots of past references. I imagine watching seasons 1-3 will just feel weird now

-After Bianca I almost feel like there's no point. She was PERFECT and I doubt anything is going to come close

-Season 7 (I'm just over halfway) is frustrating as on paper the tasks seem like the most amazing ever but this crop of Queens aren't good enough to make the best of it. There's too many vile personalities in the group. Even when they manage to be funny, it feels like there's an underlying nastiness with the likes of Violet and Pearl. I genuinely don't want anyone to win except Ginger maybe.

-Even though I laugh every episode I'm surprised by the lack of genuinely funny Queens. Bianca was the best but also the most traditional and I can't believe there aren't more like her. Did they all manage to cobble together properly hilarious audition videos, because "pretty" on its own doesn't cut it, yet every season so far we get a bunch of personality vacuums without a joke between them. Is this just an American thing? Even when you see the shittiest drag queen in the roughest dive here the emphasis is on jokes. Maybe it's just harder on TV, but I can't forgive bringing in the likes of Kenya Michaels.

-I assume All Stars 2 is the one to watch after S7? Not on Netflix though :evil:

I'm sure I can sniff it out somewhere. I did bother with all the Untuckeds from Season 4 and even though they were worthwhile it got to be a pain so I skipped them for 5 and 6. I don't feel my viewing experience suffered from it

I never watched them until I caught up properly. Not watching didn't detract, but I suspect you miss some story arc.
 
I don't usually approve of the 'you haven't fully experienced it if you haven't watched Untucked', but for season 6 the unravelling of Laganja is so much more fleshed out by it.
 
I take it back about Pearl not being that nice, she's just NOT THAT GOOD

Violet winning the Hello Kitty challenge was just all kinds of :manson: Ironically Pearl was very good there, relatively.

This is all lead to a very obvious shrug of a Violet win in the end. Shame as the previous 3 winning Queens were pretty magnificent in their own ways. I can't EVER imagine wanting to see a Violet show..
 
I just started on All Stars 2 and the first episode is probably better than all the best bits of season 7 combined.
 
I saw Violet during the BOTS tour. Her show was very good, so aware and in command of every movement of her body.

He hesitates. “Drag loses its sense of danger and its sense of irony once it’s not men doing it, because at its core it’s a social statement and a big f-you to male-dominated culture. So for men to do it, it’s really punk rock, because it’s a real rejection of masculinity.”

So how can a transgender woman be a drag queen? “Mmmm. It’s an interesting area. Peppermint didn’t get breast implants until after she left our show; she was identifying as a woman, but she hadn’t really transitioned.” Would he accept a contestant who had? He hesitates again. “Probably not. You can identify as a woman and say you’re transitioning, but it changes once you start changing your body. It takes on a different thing; it changes the whole concept of what we’re doing. We’ve had some girls who’ve had some injections in the face and maybe a little bit in the butt here and there, but they haven’t transitioned.”
 
What I found most chaff-grating about that article was poor dear sad old Decca writing that she’s never met anyone who actually cares who wins the show. Bitch has clearly NEVER met an INTERNET GAY!

It's a bit icky and tone deaf to say that you only transition when you get boobs or change your body.

Having a silicon ass didn't hurt Trinity's chances so I don't see how having breasts should.

Anyhow, it's not exactly shocking that RuPaul isn't the most enlightened and he should be called out for it.
 
I feel like it's just ill judged. It's like he's tiptoeing around distinguishing women born female to trans women so is thinking on his feet. If he'd said "I wouldn't rule it out but it'd be less likely for us to have a biologically female drag queen because by its nature the show would risk losing its edge, whereas accepting trans contestants is still challenging social norms" then it'd be fine. It's the bit Phoenix mentioned that is icky.

So in that sense I fail to see how Ru is being transphobic by saying that he probably wouldn’t accept a trans woman who had transitioned, as he’s applying a rule of exclusion to both biological and trans women which is directly based on the nature of the show. TBH I think it’s kind of disgusting that the finger of disapproval is being waved at RuPaul of all people, given that there are all manner of other exponents of (genuine) transphobia who should be called to question in the first instance.
 
Criticizing or assessing transgenderism does not make one transphobic. Drag and Transgender are two different things and the show is for Drag. It's a pretty simple concept, you'd think even the Guardian would get it.
 
'Even The Guardian'? It's one journalist interviewing him and asking a question, the paper isn't passing judgement.

Never mind that a fair few other papers probably wouldn't even carry the article.
 
It's difficult because no matter how he answers he would have offended certain groups. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't sort of situation for him. That being said, his comments about pre- and post-implants being some kind of 'confirmation' of transition are ludicrous of course.

It was bound to happen sooner or later as he has entered the mainstream.
 
I never quite binge watch this, but I'm about halfway through Allstars 2 and it really is everything I could ever want from this show. I sort of feel like I can't watch any more ever again because this HAS to be the apex, Bianca aside.

Alyssa is so much more endearing and entertaining than in her season. She's not even that good, it's more she's just so damn likeable.

Alaska is the prime example of finding your USP and working it. Incredible.

The Phi Phi arc is car crash TV. I'm up to the episode where she left. She far outstayed her welcome but it was horrible seeing how desperate she was to prove something and that exit where it was clear she was desperate and close to tears was AWFUL. I nearly felt sorry for her. I didn't like the line about "even Alaska agreed I was shafted by Sharon in my season" or whatever it was though. Phi Phi fucked that up all by herself.

All in all this is wonderful so far, though naturally it has a few dodgy things like Roxxxy lasting this long...
 
And based on what occured so far, Tatianna and Alyssa were the ones that left way too soon - to have them BOTH back at the expense of Phi Phi was delicious
 
And on the next episode, Roxxxy stays again. Fuck you Alaska, I actually thought Katya was better in the lip sync too. The top 5 seems a bit more SOUR but it's still the best it's ever been.
 
It is a truly spectacular season @Raining On Me, for all the reasons you've mentioned. And it stays good right until the end :D

As for Ru and that interview, he's been pretty clear on his feelings on this from day one. I don't think he's transphobic in the slightest, and as Z-K says, there are far better evils to fight in struggle for trans acceptance than RuPaul. You can't say he hasn't been through the mill in his life and career even though it probably looks terribly easy at this point - but the struggle has surely been real.

Sure, the line about people only truly becoming trans after getting breasts is daft as a brush. But I don't think it in any way tries to disparage the trans experience with regards to the show.
