Truly one of their greatest songs ever, shoved away on a fucking B-side, and VINYL ONLY at that. It wasn't until the Singles Box Set that we got a digital version. It then went on to WIN the vote for the Bonus CD of Ten, cementing it as a FAN FAVOURITE.

The production is also excellent, with the synths, the bassline, the instrumental middle 8 and the whooshing sound in the last choruses. It's so icy, so detached, so FRENTIC!

It's Kimberley's finest moment (not that she has many), and I think the track she sings most on of all their oeuvre. She is their weakest vocalist, but her vocals seem to work on this. And apart from Nicola's half-verse, it sounds like none of the other girls are on the song AT ALL.

I still cannot FATHOM why Xenomania decided not to put Memory of You on Out of Control when SHIT like Fix Me Up was on the album. I'm not quite sure it was single-worthy (it's too dark) but surely it should have made the cut!

Of course Nicola went on to release her own version (also as a B-side), which would have been recorded at the same time, as the backing track is EXACTLY the same as that is what Xenomania used to do. Her version is also good, but I don't think it has the DESPERATION that Kimberley has (though I will probably be alone here). It just WORKS better with Kimberley for me. The backing track seems to totally drown Nicola out.



The Girls Aloud version was originally called Japan, and their version wasn't even the first, it origanated as a Trance song by a group called Cadence, with vocals by Fame Academy alumni Louise Griffith (the one that was shagging Jenson Button). Their version is very of it's time, but only has the first verse of the Girls Aloud version. Not a bad version, either.



(Vote on the Kimba version, as that's the OFFICIAL GA version)
 
I don’t think that poor dear sad old Kimberley gives it an air of desperation AT ALL! If anything it’s the mechanical autotune on the vocals which gives it a truly horrifying and utterly thrilling frisson of SILENTLY DYING INSIDE :disco:

Its a little overrated tbh. Well overrated by the GA community, no-one else has heard of it :grin:

It's Kimba's best moment but that's like saying its Andrew Ridgeley's best moment.

Love Nikki's version.
 
I've said it before and it has been mentioned here, but if only they'd put it in the place of "Fix Me Up"- imagine THAT as "Turn To Stone", "Untouchable", "Memory of You", "Love Is Pain" ICY ELECTRO FOUR FINGER SALUTE :disco:
 
I'd have also put "She" on instead of "We Wanna Party" as well...

I love FIX ME UP to the point i'm going to RANDOMLY capitalise words to EMPHASIZE it!

I DO like We Wanna Party, but it sounded totally out of place on Out of Control, and like it was a few years old. It would have fit better on What Will The Neighbours Say.

Was this not only available mail order or something? I seem to remember mine coming in the post and this being abnormal for a major label single.
 
I think I need to revisit this.

I only really remember it as being AVERAGE.

I believe so. It was around a time when vinyl wasn’t massively sold in shops anyway, no?
 
The singles box describes it thus:

"In one of the most CONTROVERSIAL moves of Girls Aloud's entire career a rather splendid song entitled 'Memory of You' was relegated to the flip side of this release's 7" format, sparking OUTRAGE as fans a) prepared to take to the streets in protest at their inability to either purchase or play the track, then b) calmed down again when it became apparent that the song would, eventually, be released on...a singles box set". (my caps)

So poor fans had to buy the whole singles box if they wanted it. And I can only assume Nadine wrote this blurb
 
Literally just discovered this (knowingly anyway).

I know 11/10 is banned, so 12/10.

It does boggle the mind that this wasnt an album track mind. I just cant get my head around it. Much like Graffiti My Soul not being a single.
