Have you ever been obsessed with anything/anyone?

I am serious.

Very recently someone told me halfway through a conversation, "... yes, well, but you're obsessed with Madonna".

And I had to stop and think. I never thought of it as an obsession.

Oh I get obsessed all the time with music related things.

I spent years obsessed with Alanis Morissette, Tori Amos and Kate Bush at various times. There were stages I'd talk to anyone about them even if they didn't give a fuck.

Most recently it was A Star Is Born. I just couldn't stop thinking about the soundtrack, Lady Gaga's reignited career, etc. I enjoy the feeling and it's always pretty positive obsessions and nowadays they tend not to last so long but when I was younger they would last years.

I tend to get varying degrees of obsessed about a lot of my favourite things. I seldom just seem to quite like things - it's kind of all or nothing.

i’d say this for me also.

I think my friends see me as a fairly obsessive person because I'm quite serious about all the things I love and am intellectually interested in. But I'm a passionate person and I'm pretty as peace with it (now). It's taken me a while to understand that it's a really critical part of my personality and worldview.

i obsess a lot and i'm very compulsive. i'm the type of person who can't let go of stuff and just stop going over it or move on. be it conflict, nagging thoughts, food. i keep a minimum amount of food at home (especially sweet stuff) as i won't rest until it's gone.

i think it's usually a sort of sublimation of sexual energy but my last obsessive bout hasn't been about collecting stuff and has lasted for quite a while which is starting to get more than a little disconcerting. especially coupled with my compulsion to eat all the fucking time now that i've stopped smoking and drinking.

I get obsessed with many things. Popstars (in blocks of several weeks/months at a time before it abruptly dies usually), art, books, ideas, football, people in my friend circle, the guilty pleasure of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, casual self analysis, dark self analysis, a particular item of clothing... I think it's quite healthy. I'd hate to be one of those boring fucks with half a pulse who doesn't love anything except novelty socks.

I almost think this deserves its own topic because I've been pondering my relationship to food for a while now, especially since moving to Amsterdam. I eat obsessively sometimes despite not being hungry - I'll snack while I cook dinner, eat fucking loads and then have chocolate or ice cream. Luckily I'm slim but probably won't always be so I'd like to explore this and figure out if it's linked to my happiness (surely it is).

I've had obsessive issues with food (but let's not go there, I'm sure the threads from 2011-2012 are still here).

And yes I've had obsessions with artists I think.

But compulsions I don't think I have had. That's slightly different.

Then again -

Fan is short for fanatic at the end of the day. So if you're a 'fan' of anyone or anything, then you're a fanatic by definition, which means you're obsessed.

Well not really because I'm 'obsessed' with a lot of my favourite artists if the Madonna thing is an obsession and most certainly I'm not as obsessed as, say Michelle Budd or some of the others are (#insidejoke)

Is she still around? And what about the lovely Marc/Marcus?

I've had this.

If I get into an artist, I can find myself needing to hear every scrap of audio they've ever issued. I have 2 different box sets of Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" because the additional material was different and I was obsessing over that album and that era. Jandek went like that for a while, so did Marina (avec Diamonds, of course - oh the awful remixes I endured...), Polly Harvey, Richard Youngs, Nurse With Wound...and, inevitably, The Fall.

I do have an obsessive streak something that only really came up a few years ago when I went a bit barking.

I don't really have this AT ALL which makes living with someone with OCD even more difficult than it already would be

Apart from the that really messy BREAKUP where I went a bit PSYCHO for a while but LET'S NOT GO THERE

Is this something most people have, or is it likely that the kind of personality that leads us to Moopy is more likely than normal to get obsessed by things? Often people are bemused by the fact that I love particular singers so much, when they just like music generally without knowing much about any artist in particular.

Having said that, I know guys who know as much about football as I do about the singers I like - encyclopaedic knowledge of facts and stats. I guess that's a similar thing

I don't know if I do, I lose interest in subjects quite quickly. I definitely have a more general interest in music, which probably explains why my taste is so all over the place. Stan culture is completely absurd to me, it's like choosing your own feudal lord.

It's the same with football, I do have an autist-level knowledge of pointless bullshit but I couldn't watch it all the time. I can easily pass a couple of weeks without watching a full match.

I don’t believe anyone is obsessed here

* buys all 45 versions of Kylies album *

To answer the question properly: no.

I sometimes get into things a bit (football, cycling, watching videos of old people falling over, wikipedia) but I inevitably get bored before long.

I would never obsess over a person, group or similar. Humans are too boring.

I would say DEFINITELY the latter!

I think it’s generally music-related things which inspire my obsessive loon propensities, and obviously it spirals very easily into unhinged insanity in the chat lounge when others are joining in. I like books but I don’t obsess over authors, and I never feel the need to know everything about a particular subject or seek out entire works. I mean God I fucking love Isabelle Huppert but I’ve not seen every film she’s been in, and probably never will. Probably because I’m quite lazy. It just doesn’t compare to the minimal effort involved in plonking a particular song on which generates instant shaking and crying :disco:

Oh I have FADS where I short term obsess over something, but move onto something else quickly.

I've only ever collected all the albums by a few artists, but don't buy every version. Far from it. Long term looning kinda baffles me.

I don't GET people who are NOT obsessed with something. Like when I ask what music they like or what their favorite artists are and they say "I listen to everything". Fuck off.

I rather unreasonably refused to ever call someone (actually rather lovely) back who I met some decades ago because I asked him what music he liked (after our one night of bum fun) and he said he “listened to Capital” :zombie:

To think that I could still be with him now, almost certainly living in Biarritz and going to parties with Joan Collins, if only I’d not been so intolerant. Although we’d probably be listening to Capital :side-eye:
