CARLY RAE SAYS HI.
Carly has the ULTIMATE pop voice. Sweet, heartfelt but still has a surprising amount of power to it. A tonne of her songs would sound SHIT if it wasn't her voice. Most certainly if Brinty had sung them.

Britney Spears has always had a shit voice. Her songs in a way are good IN SPITE of her voice.

She's obviously no great shakes in the vocal department, but I absolutely think her performance is key to ...Baby One More Time's success. She sells the living daylights out of it.
The first album singles in general, she sounds more engaged and richer than I think she ever did subsequently. Born To Make You Happy is obviously another great example.

There's definitely a strong element of EFFORT on the first album and even though many of the songs are mediocre, there's tons more investment than at any time subsequently. Then again, at that point she wasn't "Britney Spears" - she was just a kid living the dream of recording a pop album.
There are some nice moments on the Oops!... album as well - but by that time she was definitely starting to inhabit the songs as "Britney Spears" and ramping up the vocal tics. By the third album it was completely endemic.
Her vocals (or lack of) were never REALLY an issue when she was a pop frontrunner because it was clear that most songs were written FOR her and structured around her trademark style of delivery. It's much more limiting now for a NUMBER of reasons, but there's a definite sense now that the label are grabbing at songs that were probably intended for other acts - or at least, certainly weren't written with the intention that they'd be performed in such a...choice style.

I am having a moment to ... Baby, One More Time today for the first time in about twenty years. The final glorious minute was the first recorded instance of gays shaking and crying uncontrollably and then forever having no choice but to stan.
And on her vocal performance - she sells the absolute shit out of her. Her low notes in the verses and the middle eight are just... ugh I can't even. *worships*

I preferred Oops I Did It Again to this in terms of early era classics.

I rarely revisit it but any mark that isn't a 10 is trying too hard.
An obvious 10, but I think, like @BoysForSeles said, Oops I Did It Again took the formula and perfected it
Absolute ten. Still, to me, the most textbook pop package I’ve ever seen. Wannabe and Can’t Get You Out Of My Head run it close, but I still rate this the best. The song, the look, the imagery, the vocal - everything is immaculate.
