Wednesday bets £1.5 million in three years

Like most things, I find gambling moderately addictive. I love it for a while then get bored.

I can't gamble. Last time I tried one of the blokes in the office set me up a BetFred account for Ascot that had a £5 free bet and I matched it with a fiver of my own money. Placed a couple of bets that won (I didn't care) and literally felt sick until I could get my fiver back out again. It's not for me.

I've never enjoyed it - it's a logical fallacy or a calculated risk in which the calculations are beyond human endeavor.

I cannot stand losing so it really is not for me. Worst of all, I always end up cashing out and regretting it. I had a sport betting app a few months ago but deleted it in a FURY.

I am a MILD gambler- I like a flutter on the athletics and generally make my money back if I do indulge, but I'm far too scared to do much. I also like to chuck a tenner total on various random bets if I'm in the pub watching sport such as football or rugby with people more interested than I- makes it more interesting.

Thing is, I don't know how I feel about the absolution of responsibility our society has. Yes, you might have been bombarded by advertising and I agree in this situation that they overstepped the mark but I do think it's rather easy to just say "It's not my fault" about such matters.

Having said all of this, I'm currently furious about my own situation. About a year ago I took out two new credit cards and quickly whacked up big bills on both- £5k on one, £3k on another- right up to their limit. I knew what I was doing- they had 0% on purchases for two years and since then I've paid the minimum amount of each card every month- so £150 max- and then used that £150 throughout the month to put it back to the limit. Now, surely that is the sign of someone who is struggling with cashflow and has real problems, but actually I know I get a bonus in September which will pay them off- but EVERY SINGLE MONTH (and in some cases more often) in the past year I've had emails telling me they'll put my limit up if I want them to as I'm clearly "running short" etc. I'm sensible enough to know what I'm doing, but why nothing is being done about this in this current climate, I don't know...

The house always wins. I think casinos are boring.

I've noticed a lot of people who like coke a bit too much like gambling too. I'm sure theres some dopamine based science in there.

Office baby's back for another visit. She isn't quite as much fun when she's teething and grumpy. I've had her attached to my hip most of the afternoon because everytime we put her down she cries again. I've franked the mail, replied to some emails and filed three VAT returns one-handed. My shoulder's wet-through with baby drool because she was biting it, she's bitten my finger and poor Eeyore teddy's sopping wet too.

I love a bit of gambling, as does the other half, but I must admit, shamefully, that this year it actually HAS got a little out of hand. Don't get me wrong, nothing life destroying, the bill money is still safe etc and we do okay, but it started to become FAR too much of a habit using spending money I could have used elsewhere (you know, on actual useful items or less damaging pleasures) or money I was trying to put aside each month.

It's also worse when you've had a drink, one thing fuelling the other as the risk is eliminated in your head. Drugs, drink, gambling, it's all the same. One time back in March we went on a bit of a pub crawl and I'd somehow spent a small fortune later that night online gambling. I felt fucking gross the next day.

The thing is it's just so easy to login to your phone and start it up. That's half the problem. And it is quite thrilling to do - the buzz of potentially winning, and I have won a few big prizes before, is the same addictive buzz you might get from booze and the like. But when you start to go down the route of, "I'll try to win this back, another tenner won't hurt" or equally as bad, doing it out of boredom as if it was Candy Crush or something, you know it's time to reign it in...

I mean that said, as much as we both know we've wasted far too much cash on it, I still have limits - I can't even imagine what it must be like for people losing THOUSANDS of pounds on it, literally losing EVERYTHING. Especially if you've a family to support, where is the moral off switch in your head?

And yet it's so easy to see how it can be done...

I need to just stick to the once-a-year Eurovision flutter and be done.

Please stop.

I have just had an email advising me that the mystery emailer has collected all my details and passwords for my accounts. Not only this but they have caught me PLEASURING MYSELF over webcam and are going to publish it online unless I send them 800 bitcoins. WHATEVER AM I MEANT TO DO? :o

I get several of them every day on my work email, the bitcoin amount increases with each one. I'm also good if I need a Russian girlfriend who loves sexy times :D

Please stop.

It's not that bad!! :D (said every addict ever)

I'm just trying to say we've done it more than we should but it's nothing horrendous. Just cause for a bit of self reflection and restraint.

How many bottles of wine or some other tipple do many of us buy a week, yet that's seen as far safer and more socially acceptable which is absurd really.

*remortages the house for William Hill*

Oh I love a gamble. The odd bet on politics/Eurovision etc (which reminds me, I must do a Mercury Prize one) but mostly slot machines. Vegas <3 <3 <3
