I’m quite surprised to learn that he had a WIFE with some of that back cat :side-eye:

‘What About Us?’ (amongst others) remains an absolute classic. Just incredible. I thought the radio was broken when I first heard it. In fact I was very disappointed that it didn’t kickstart a whole trend of similarly staggering, disjointed rip-offs

I though the same about "What About Us?" when I heard it too. The weird, out of time bass and drums still sounds like they've just been beamed down from MARS to this day.
 
It's Not Right and Lose My Breath are both legit 13/10s.

Everything there are all varying degrees of amazing (Holler aside).

Wow. What a back catalogue. He is responsible for at least 3 of my favourite songs of all time. RIP. :(
 
I say that on one hand and then notice nestled in to the middle of that ASTONISHINGLY GOOD back catalogue is Mel B’s - Tell Me. :D

So HE was responsible for that iconic line “ All you loved was Mel Beh’s Moneeeyyyy”.

APPARENTLY Mel herself was one of the co-writers.
 
Naturally it took THIS for me to realise the immensity of ‘Say My Name’, not least because it exposes DC’s horrendous hard-faced sass as fatuous posturing. Thank goodness for ‘Smalltown Boy’ magically revealing the not so quiet, increasing desperation :disco:



I mean as if she’s really going to come over with her clique :rolleyes:
 
This is genuinely sad. One of those people I'd seen the name of a thousand times on credits, but never knew who he was so I'm glad it made the news cos he's brought a hell of a lot of joy to my life.

Yes, he was one of Darkchild's gang. No idea how the writing duties were split between them all.

I guess this is like for millennials when Burt Bacharach goes (he is still alive, right?) for me.
 
And re. What About Us?, I'm quite certain I actively disliked that song for quite a few years initially. Then I heard it again after several years and suddenly it made sense.

Agreed. I actually don’t think Holler was ever as bad as many made it out to be at the time.
 
I've been having a sample from Christian's list and Tell Me Why, Turntable and Imagine are all brilliant. I really should remember them all, but I was a messy little cunt back then.

When they released Holler had the tide not pretty much totally turned for them and most people who enjoyed their music before suddenly developed great vitriol for them?

That, and an RnB pastiche just wasn't what I wanted from them. Like so much music time tells.

I think it would have worked for them better now. At the time they were releasing RnB music pop was still very much on top.
 
Although SURELY the haters were still wanting them to trounce BLOODY WESTLIFE in the race to number 1 album.

At that point in time it was all about Vengaboys, Steps and Geri for me.
 
The knives were properly out for the Spice Girls by the time Holler was released. The album being mostly crap and Mel C actively not wanting to be there didn't help much, of course, but I think by their very nature they had a major uphill struggle not to burn out as quickly as they did.

Alongside sitting through the God Forsaken West End Musical, the Westlife album battle definitely ranks highly among my own personal 9/11s.
