I don't generally stress about the impending spectre of death or anything, but I do like the odd stark reminder of the passage of time via the medium of pop music. I've been seeing a lot of them recently.

Case in point:

Apparently, current pop sensation Billie Eilish was born the same year Sound of the Undergound by Girls Aloud came out.

I also realised while reading an old thread about chart toppers by elder pop stars that I am now older than Kylie was when she last had a #1 hit. :lolly:
 
Robyn released her first single in 1995. 24 years ago. 24 years prior to that among the songs released were Imagine, It's Too Late, American Pie, Starirway to Heaven and Brown Sugar.
 
It’s usually when people start referring to the likes of Eminem as Old Skool, or seeing younger millennials getting nostalgic about the Max Martin Pop of 1999, like “those were the good old days”.
 
Not music related, but my friend recently told me her teenage niece saw a B&W film being shown and she thought the TV was broken :D
 
Wannabe was released closer in time to Waterloo than to the present day.
 
We have a youngster in our team who has never heard of Westlife.
 
On a similar vein, 39 years ago when I was born ABBA was number 1. I've always known that, that doesn't make me feel old. However 39 years prior to that was WORLD WAR TWO when Glen Miller was TOP OF THE NOT YET EXISTING HIT PARADE.
 
I was speaking to a younger person recently who had never heard of All Saints, and genuinely thought I was talking about the clothes shop. I was obviously HORRIFIED
 
My Dad was really unhappy when I pointed out that the Beatles first gig was closer in time to the death of Queen Victoria than to the present day. I assume that we're all too young for that one to bother us...

Except that's not true. The Beatles first gig was 1961, 60 year after Queen V passed away too young. 1961 is a mere 58 years ago.

Well, their first gig under that name - Paul, John and George were playing together as early as 1958.
 
I'm old enough to remember when people who weren't around in the 60's cared about The Beatles.

Same. Anna from This Life was the first person I ever heard state that they were over-rated. And that was 1997.
 
Another recent thing was a 26 year old colleague from my team who is only really into Hip Hop and Afro Beats, genuinely had no idea about the concept of sampling and when I explained it, he thought that Dr Dre was some kind of exception where he had composed every note and beat of his songs. When I gave him the link to WhoSampled.com his mind was blown.

That's just naive rather than young. Mind you my mind is still blown every now and again when I realise certain favourites are sample or covers.
 
I'm old enough to remember when Gary Glitter could play to 10,000 in Glasgow in the run-up to Christmas.
 
For me, it’s always the distance from Holiday being released and now is the same as when I was born and World War 2

The moment I found out Corona’s Rhythm Of The Night is basically a note-for-note reversion of an italo disco song remains the definition of JAW DROPPING!

Don’t even start on Saint Etienne’s Like A Motorway :argh:
 
The time comparisons always feel really strange...in my mind the 80’s and 90’s lasted more than a decade each while these past 10 years feel like 5 at the most.
 
It's age - your sense of proportion changes.

I;m getting to the point where I've gone beyond 10th, 20th and 25th anniversary editions. Madness are doing 40 years since their debut album and I had that on cassette only slightly after the fact.
 
It’s the fact that it’s no longer even a format change, so some of my original mp3 files are now having anniversary reissues.
 
I feel like the late 90s were legitimately 20 years ago (and for good reason), but the early 00s are wayyyyy later.

There’s some line, 1997 is “the past” but 2001 is somehow recent.

Atomic Kitten 20th anniversary?!

I blame the Spice Girls, they crammed so much into 2 years that it feels like their descendants much be a lot later.
 
Obviously not music, but I'm struggling to get my head around the fact that as of next week, there will be adults who were born after 9/11.
 
Kylie has been famous for 31 years. Beyonce has been famous for 22 years. Britney Spears 20.

When I was a kid Cliff Richard was celebrating "30 years at the top".
 
It's been 22 years since Shania Twain released her record-shattering, crossover genre-forming, diamond-certified seminal opus Come On Over and established herself as that bitch :( I was six and not rich. Now I'm 28 and not rich.
 
a while ago someone commented here that their nephew/niece didn't have the SLIGHTEST of who Whitney Houston was BUT they were very familiar with Kygo. I literally felt shooked.
 
For quite a long time, my Well We Obviously Have Nothing To Say To Each Other yardstick was whether someone knew ‘Say Hello, Wave Goodbye’ or not but most of that generation are probably DEAD NOW

Poor Joan. Forced to live on dust and crusts while the Etiennes were down the Hat and Fan merrily blowing the £7.50 royalties on bitter and desperately trying to be working class while aching to get back to their ponies. (I do obviously sort of love them really. It’s just that I’ve recently found their intermittent tendency to fetishise dead-end council estate living - most notably on ‘Tales From Turnpike House’ - to be quite sick-making. “You’ll never do whatever common people do” indeed. Thank you Jarvis.)
 
Like A Motorway is by far my fave St Et song, it STILL hurts that that the melody was entirely stolen from elsewhere* :D
